Message from Ms. Kearns
Dear Lake Braddock Families,
As September comes to a close, we want to acknowledge that this past week has been a mix of emotions for our community. We appreciate those around us who provide the pillar of kindness and strength in challenging times. The support of our Lake Braddock community is the stability of our backbone.
The Greek storyteller, Aesop, once said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” We hope our #BruinNation continues to follow this guidance here and in the future. What you think may be a small gesture, may brighten the day of your fellow Bruin.
Go Bruins!
Lindsey Kearns
We cannot express enough how much we appreciate our Lake Braddock custodial team! We celebrate them on October 2 and every day!

Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program
We are pleased to announce that the following list of students has been named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from Lake Braddock and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
Congratulations, Bruins!

Transportation-Bus Routes Updates
Good morning #BruinNation! Just a note that some bus stops were shifted to address several overloaded buses. An eNotify went out to those routes. These updated routes will begin Thursday. If you have any questions, please see the FCPS Transportation page.
What is Safe Routes to School?
Safe Routes to School is a program schools can implement to encourage students to walk and roll to school, and to ensure they arrive safely. FCPS, Virginia DOT and the US Department of Transportation support Safe Routes to School with education, infrastructure funding, and events.
One way schools get funding for safety improvements is by collecting crash and near miss data. If you or your student have been involved in a crash or near miss near our school, please report the incident using this survey: https://novasafestreets.org/near-miss-and-dangerous-intersection-survey/. Your responses are completely anonymous, and the only info you add is the location, type of incident and the conditions (time of day, weather, distractions). If you see or have a vehicle involved crash, please ensure it is reported to Fairfax County Police, even if no serious injuries result. Our wish is to one day have safer crosswalks, multi-use paths and a student-activated crossing light near our main entrance, but we need your input to justify funding for these improvements.
Want to meet friends and have a voice in making our community safer? Join our group! Email LBSS.SRTS@gmail.com and follow us on Instagram @LBSS_SRTS.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener
Students in grades K-2 will no longer participate in the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) screener. Instead, the Child Behavior Rating Scale administered in kindergarten, existing attendance, and behavior data will be used to determine necessary social emotional instruction and supports. School teams will use these measures alongside family input, as they develop their understanding of students’ needs and strategies to support them.
Students in grades 3-12 will be able to participate in the SEL screener. School teams and families use this information to develop positive school cultures and support students academically and personally. This year, students will participate in the screener in the fall (October/November) and spring (March).
Parents are able to opt their child out of taking the SEL screener. Read more about SEL and signature practices online at the FCPS website or at our Social Emotional Learner Screening page on our Lake Braddock website.

Supporting Your Child's Mental Health
Identifying whether your child’s behaviors are normal or a warning sign of a mental health concern can be difficult. Talk to your child and pay attention to their actions. Also, consider these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep, or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. All Fairfax County public schools have at least one school counselor, school psychologist, and school social worker. Please reach out to one of these staff members to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Call your school or visit their website for staff members’ contact information. Find additional information to support your child’s wellness on FCPS’ website.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harm to self or others, please take action:
- Text NEEDHELP to 85511 for the CrisisLink hotline or call them at 703-527-4077.
- Go to the nearest emergency room or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
