Principal’s Message
We are excited to celebrate with West Springfield High School as they play Hayfield Secondary this evening at their Homecoming game beginning at 7:00 pm. To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all attendees, please note that middle and elementary students attending the game MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian. To support WSHS and our students who attend the game, a member of the Irving Middle School staff attends each WSHS football game to help encourage good sportsmanship and behavior at the games.
This afternoon, WSHS will hold their annual Homecoming Parade at 4:30 - going down Carrleigh Parkway, left on Forrester BLVD and then up Rolling Road to the high school. We have reminded students to have fun and represent Irving MS and themselves in a positive manner. Candy will be thrown out to spectators along the route.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend! Go Spartans!

World Language Credit Exam
Can your child read and write proficiently in another language? If the answer is YES than you may want to register them for the World Language Credit Exam
What is the World Language Credit Exam?
A free, optional test offered by FCPS to provide students the opportunity to EARN HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT for their ability to read and write in another language. This is a rigorous test that assesses language experience (example, student can read entire newspaper in another language and write an essay using complete sentences).
Why take the World Language Credit Exam?
If students pass the exam, they can earn up to three (3) high school credits towards the advanced diploma language graduation requirements.
When is the World Language Credit Exam?
The 2022 World Languages Credit Exam will be administered on November 3, 9, and 10, 2022. You will only be registered for one date. Registration opens on Tuesday, September 6, at 8 a.m. and closes on Thursday, October 6, at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.

If your child arrives late or needs to leave early
If your child arrives late to school, they need to sign in in Student Services to get a pass. If your child needs to leave early, please call the attendance line (703-912-4545) or send a note with your child. In either case, he/she should report to Student Services first thing in the morning to receive a pass. Parents/guardians must come into the school building to sign out their child and will be asked to show photo identification. Parents/guardians must also provide permission for their child to be picked up by someone other than a parent/guardian.
Food For Neighbors
Thank you for an amazing Red Bag Collection on September 11; all of our volunteers were amazing! The Springfield area collected over 3500 lbs of food that will be sent right back out to our students in need.
Food for Neighbors is an all-volunteer organization committed to helping local teens struggling with hunger. The food donated goes straight to students and families in Springfield and neighboring communities.
With your support, we can reach even more students in need. Participation is as simple as filling a Food For Neighbors Red Bag once every other month and putting it on your porch on our pick up days. We provide the bags, a desired food list, and pick-up date reminder texts. Our next collection day is October 29th. If you would like to donate food, please register as a Red Bag Donor here. If you would like to volunteer as a driver to pick up food or to help sort the food once it is delivered to Irving on our collection days, please sign up here.
If your student needs extra food for the weekend (soup/pasta, crackers, granola bars, oatmeal, fruit snack or milk/juice), please email Meg Gollinger at magollinger@fcps.edu.

SR&R Signature Sheet Due September 30
FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/caregiver with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.
Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/caregiver’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.
Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30.Visit the SIS Parentvue Account Overview page for help logging in to your account. Please contact us at 703-912-4500, if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.

Off to a Busy Start!
Every student at Irving should have had the opportunity to visit the library so far this year. We have already hosted all of the 7th grade English classes twice, and the 8th-grade classes once. In addition to the classroom visits scheduled by teachers, students are able to pop into the library before or after school, or may come during their daily break session or during 3rd period ROCK Block sessions.
We love to promote reading here at Irving. Ask your student what book they are reading now. It could be a book for an English project, a book for “Take Time” reading, or just a book they are reading for fun.
Our after-school book club begins on Monday, October 3rd. It is open to students who like to read and discuss books.
