This week at Garfield

Kindergarten Music Class

This week in music class, we picked our horses by naming colors and danced along to music. Mrs. Cooper kept us moving and grooving during specials.

Thank you Ms. Rihaly for making sure all our Kindergarten students can hear and see correctly. We were jumping for joy as we passed our vision tests!

Third graders had a blast doing science class outside this week. We are so grateful the weather cooperated.

Our hallways are starting to fill with beautiful projects from the 1st quarter. Your Eagles cannot wait to share what all they've been working on in school!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE - 'One Chip Challenge'

one chip

A recent Tik Tok challenge called the “One Chip Challenge” has been gaining popularity in our area. This dangerous challenge encourages people to eat a chip that is so spicy it comes with a warning that it can cause medical emergencies. Additionally, stores are prohibited from selling these chips to children under the age of 18. Within Fairfax County, some schools have needed to call 911 due to the extreme reactions some students are experiencing after consuming these chips. At Garfield, there have been reports of these chips being tried on the bus and being brought into the cafeteria. Please talk with your children about how dangerous this challenge can be and encourage them to speak to an adult if they see these chips. Thank you for helping us to keep our students safe from this most recent Tik Tok challenge.

The image above is disturbing and is in no way connected with FCPS or Garfield ES. It's a problem across the country and we are doing our best to address it to keep students safe.

Virginia Growth Assessment

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a new test required for students in grades 3-8. The state legislature introduced this requirement to measure student growth and progress within the school year in reading and mathematics.

For fall 2022, VGA will address content that was taught in the previous school year. The purpose of this fall’s VGA is to identify potential learning gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no “passing” or “failing” outcome for the VGA. Results will provide a starting point to measure growth and will offer information about areas of strength and areas for growth in reading and mathematics.

Students enrolled in grades 3-8 will generally take an assessment in both reading and mathematics. Here are the dates for the VGA assessments in Grades 3-6.

Providing a Safe and Welcoming Space This School Year and Beyond

Trust Image

As a continued commitment to foster a caring culture and strives to provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for all students and families in Fairfax County Public Schools, School Board recently approved a Trust Policy. It aligns with Fairfax County Government’s Public Trust and Confidentiality Policy to ensure that FCPS students and families can access FCPS benefits and services without fear that information will be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to federal immigration officials. Additional information is available in multiple languages on FCPS’ Trust Policy webpage. If you have questions about the policy, please contact FCPS’ Office of Professional Learning and Equity at OPLFE@fcps.edu. FCPS has established an email address for staff, students, and families to report possible Trust Policy violations. If you feel someone has violated the Trust Policy, please email Trustviolations@fcps.edu.

School Safety and Security

We take the security of our students and our staff very seriously. All exterior doors are locked during the school day. Visitors are to ring the bell at Door 1 to gain access to the main office. Every visitor/adult who enters the building is monitored.

All visitors walking into Garfield ES must ring the doorbell, state their name and purpose of the visit, and come to the office with a valid driver’s license to sign in using the Visitor Management System (VMS). The VMS will issue each visitor a sticker that should always be worn when in the building.

To maintain the momentum of instruction, items brought to the office during school hours (lunch, supplies, homework, etc.) will be held in the office for students to pick up.

2022-23 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices.

Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2022-23 Opt-Out Booklets
