Message from the Principals

Powell families,

This week our school had the honor of hosting our superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, and Stella Pekarsky, school board member, for a school visit! While we wish had time for them to visit every single classroom, they had the opportunity to spend time in Mrs. Fahey’s and Ms. Kim’s 1st grade immersion classrooms, Ms. Leeder’s enhanced autism classroom, Mrs. Bunch’s 6th grade LL-IV classroom, Mrs. Chung’s 6th grade immersion classroom, and Mrs. Baker’s 5th grade music class. It was an honor to show Dr. Reid and Mrs. Pekarsky the many programs we offer and share what makes our school unique. The true highlight was seeing their smiles as they met and connected with our students and staff!

As you may have heard. Dr. Reid is hosting Community Conversations across the Division to get to know our communities. You are encouraged to mark your calendar the Community Conversation at Centreville High School on October 18th at 6:30pm. Attendees are encouraged to register to attend: https://forms.gle/U2B1DGMY3rnkZs8m6

Your Proud Principals, Ms.Luerssen, Mrs.Song & Mrs.Cho

Upcoming:

October 26th:  In-Person Parent Night

Topic:  Full-Time AAP Screening and Eligibility

September

Want to learn about AAP?  Take a moment to view our recorded parent presentation using the CPES Parent Schoology site.  This recorded presentation allows you to have information at your fingertips about AAP.  It provides an overview of AAP and details about how students are matched with the level of AAP service to meet student needs.

On Monday, September 12th, we hosted a virtual Parent Q&A so parents could ask questions and learn.  If you still have questions:

  • Our Fall Newsletter is a great resource to read and learn about AAP in Fairfax County Public Schools.
  • Visit the AAP website to learn more!
  • Reach out to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Kathleen Bach, at kmbach@fcps.edu.

October’s Parent Night – October 26th @ 6:00PM

This meeting in October provides specific information about the full-time AAP screening process.  We will review what is required from parents, how the school supports the process, and what the screening process entails.  We will meet in the Colin Powell Elementary School Library on Monday, October 26th, at 6:00PM.  The intended audience is parents/guardians of 2nd-6th graders.

Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART)

The AART at Colin Powell Elementary School is Kathleen Bach.  If you have any questions about AAP, your child’s services, or screening, please reach out via email at kmbach@fcps.edu.  Please be mindful that during the school day Mrs. Bach is frequently with students so please allow 24 hours for a response.

Families, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources

RECEIVING A RESPONSE FOR EVERY STUDENT IS CRITICAL. PLEASE SEE BELOW.

At Colin Powell Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Our teachers have been working hard to create engaging and fun activities that build community in our classroom environments for our students. These activities may include the use of digital resources/applications on the first day of school. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://powelles.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form by as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or Nichole Lansdowne, School-Based Technology Specialist (SBTS), if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

The consent form consists of the following four steps:

  1. Parents/guardians access and login to the online form using your child’s student ID number and your parent email or phone number
  2. Parents/guardians will verify their identify by entering a security code sent to parent’s email address or mobile phone
  3. Digital signature agreement - Parents/guardians must agree to using a digital signature.
  4. Parents/guardians respond to the form, either consent to use of all the digital tools on the CPES list or do not give consent to use one or more of the digital tools on the list. If no, please provide comments in the box provided. You will receive a confirmation email once you submit the form.
