Lockdown Drill Notification

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based. We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Ben Nowak, Principal

Underclassmen Photos

September 28th - 30th

On September 28th, 29th, and 30th, Lifetouch Photography will be coming to Falls Church High School to take pictures of all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students.  The students will have their pictures taken with their English classes on one of those three days.

In the weeks leading up to picture days, English teachers will give students Lifetouch Order Forms to take home to parents/guardians with information and pricing if you would like to order pictures of your students.  If you decide to order portraits, you must have your student bring the completed order form with payment on the designated picture day to hand to the photographer.  Lifetouch recommends payment by check or money order.  Payment in cash must include the exact amount in the student’s payment envelope attached to the order form.

If your student is absent or unable to have a picture taken with the class, there will be two (2) additional make-up dates on November 3rd and  4th.

NOTE ON SENIORS:  The information above only pertains to underclassmen (9th, 10th, and 11th grade students).  Seniors (12th grade students) will not get their pictures taken with the class.  Seniors who weren’t able to get their portraits taken in August will be able to schedule individual appointments with Lifetouch/Prestige Portraits for Senior Make-Up dates (October 10th-14th).  Seniors who haven’t had portraits taken will receive postcards and have additional information shared in Schoology on how to sign up for make-up appointments later this month.

Please email Dan O’Neil (dooneil@fcps.edu) if you have any questions.

Understanding the Dangers of Opioid Use

As we begin the 2022-23 school year, public schools nationwide face a growing student wellness crisis. Our students' wellness challenges impact their ability to perform at their best in the classroom and may lead to other destructive behaviors.

In Northern Virginia, the opioid epidemic continues to impact communities including young adults, and sometimes school-age children. Tragically, this can lead to devastating outcomes. There are three things you can do now, to support student wellness and increase understanding of the dangers of opioids and fentanyl:

  • Talk with children and loved ones in your life about the dangers of drug use, especially opioids. For more information, tips on how to recognize and prevent substance abuse, and available support services, watch this webinar.
  • Safely store and dispose of medications to prevent drug misuse.
  • Sign up for a Virtual REVIVE! training class to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and administer naloxone nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.

Learn more about the dangers of opioids and available resources on our website. Visit the Student Safety and Wellness webpage for more information about a variety of topics related to student wellbeing.
