Lockdown Drill
Every school facility in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly. Now, we, along with other Fairfax County schools, have formally added an additional drill, called a lockdown drill.
A lockdown is a well-established procedure designed to protect students and staff members in a case in which there might be threats of violence within a school. During a lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or are escorted to classrooms if they are in the halls, and all interior and exterior doors are closed and locked. Once the facility is rendered safe and students are accounted for, the school is returned to normal operation.
While we have no reason to believe that any threat of violence will arise, it is always best to be prepared. It is important to train students and staff members so that we can effectively implement a lockdown in the event one becomes necessary. Training helps ensure a calmer, more effective lockdown.
To implement this training, our school will conduct a lockdown drill on September 19, 2022. This drill is generally short, typically lasting no longer than a fire drill. It will be conducted in collaboration with the FCPS Office of Safety and Security.
SR&R Signature Sheet Due September 30
FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/caregiver with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.
Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/caregiver’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.
Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30.
PSAT and SAT Testing Day
On Wednesday, October 12, 10th and 11th grade students will be taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) exam.
12th grade students can participate in SAT School Day. If your student does not intend to take the SAT assessment, please notify the SAT School Day Coordinator (Marissa King: meking@fcps.edu ) as soon as possible.
9th Graders will have an Asynchronous Learning Day.
All FCPS high schools will operate on a two-hour early release schedule. High school academy courses and all high school shuttles will be canceled on this day.
FCPS transportation is available for all students participating in the PSAT/NMSQT. Regular bus routes will be provided in the morning and after the early release. Families of students requiring alternate transportation arrangements due to accommodated testing will be contacted directly by the SAT School Day Coordinator.
At the beginning of the exam session, students see a voluntary pre-survey that asks questions about a variety of topics. You may opt out of this pre-survey for your student. You may view the pre-survey questions and access further information about this option on the SAT and PSAT Pre-Survey Opt-Out Policy webpage at https://www.fcps.edu/node/36639.
If you choose to opt your student out of the pre-survey, please notify Tom Lundy, at tplundy@fcps.edu by Friday, October 7, 2022, and include your student’s full legal name and FCPS ID number in the email. Please be sure your student knows they should not answer the pre-survey questions at the beginning of the test.
If you have questions about the PSAT/NMSQT administration, please contact us at (703) 208-2400.

Text Messages for Parents
Parents can receive text messages from FCPS for emergencies and essential information. Make sure your cell phone numbers are listed in the parent/guardian contact information section on the emergency care information form (available in SIS ParentVue) for each of your children. Parents and guardians can view and update emergency contact information online using https://www.fcps.edu/resources/parent-communication-overview/wecareschool?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=
Text messages will be sent in the event of emergencies, delays, or school closings, if buses are running more than 30 minutes late, if your student missed the morning attendance deadline, and for other important reminders.
Standard message and data charges may apply for text messages depending on your cell phone service plan. More about text messages is available online.
