When Should a Student Stay Home?

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. So when should your child stay home? Visit our site for helpful ideas regarding absences and how to work with your child and your school.

Whether students are absent because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

The Social Emotional Learning Screener -

What Every Family Needs to Know

Social and emotional learning competencies are foundational skills for success in school and beyond.  Students will participate in the SEL Screener in the fall and spring this year.   The screener provides valuable information that guides planning and learning opportunities for families, staff, students, and school communities.

Highlights include:

  • Learn about SEL in FCPS
  • Unpack the SEL Screener: What it is and how it's used?
  • Understand student results

Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R) Family Signature September 30th

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, parents/guardians must review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Please contact the school office if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.

Parental Consent for Digital Resources

At Cardinal Forest ES, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://cardinalforestes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to Nicole Ulrich, Cardinal Forest’s School Based Technology Specialist, at nkfalardeauu@fcps.edu if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE -71) Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) Emergency Care Information provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

For SY 22-23, these forms will be required for all students. Parents/guardians may submit these forms either through electronic submission accessed within the weCare@school module; or in their Tuesday folder for those families without ParentVue accounts.

Free and Reduce-Price Meals for Students

ACTION NEEDED- Requests must be submitted for this school year! No free/reduced lunches without application this school year! Please see below!

Free and Reduced Lunch Requirements For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students has ended, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Eligible families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application is accessible via the FCPS homepage. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.

COVID/Health Updates

Please do not send your child to school if there are any signs or symptoms of being ill. We can keep students and staff healthy if we all do our part by staying home when not feeling well. The  FCPS Health and Safety Guidance document continues to be updated with the latest information.

School may be out for summer, but now is the time for your child to catch up on school immunizations! Check out the list of Virginia’s required school immunizations and make your doctor appointments now before the August rush or visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of child immunization clinics.
