Principal's Message

Happy Friday, Eagle Families,

I hope this newsletter finds you with exciting outdoor activities planned for this weekend. The weather looks to be amazing–for the next 10 days! Our students are really enjoying the time outside at recess and in PE.

Thank you to the families who were able to join us virtually for our Back to School Night last night. For those who could not attend, we have information in this newsletter about Teacher Advisory and how parents can access the lessons.

Tonight, Fairfax High School kicks off their season! We hope to see our families there to support our players, band students, cheerleaders, and other students who are KJMS alum there as Lions supporting this great community event. Parents should plan to attend with their middle school students.

Enjoy the sunshine,

Tammy Silipigni,

Principal

Teacher Advisory (TA) 4th Period

Curious about what your student is doing during TA? Teacher Advisory (TA) meets every other day during 4th period. Topics that are covered in TA include Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), Naviance Academic and Career Planning, SOAR Traits, 7 Habits of Effective Teens, and Career Day among others. Students will have opportunities to check-in with their teachers as well as participating in SIS grade checks. Lessons learned in TA can lead to healthier students, improved academic and behavior outcomes, and increased preparedness for college and careers.

Many of our TA lessons these first few weeks established our routines and rules of the building including “Away for the Day,” lunch and classroom expectations, and Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). We acknowledged Katherine Johnson’s birthday during the 8/26 lesson as well as remembered and honored 9/11 in our 9/9 TA lesson. Students were introduced to Naviance which is an Academic and Career resource students will continue to use into high school. All students have created SMART goals in Naviance. 7th graders took a StrengthsExplorer survey which helped identify their top three strengths while 8th graders took the Career Clusters survey to help them figure out the “type” of career they might like one day. Both 7th and 8th graders will be able to use their results and make an informed decision when they sign up for Career Day which is on Wednesday, November 9th (more information on how to present for Career Day will be coming soon!). We encourage students to log into Naviance from home (available through Schoology) to share and discuss survey results with parents.

Students in TA also will be learning about the “7 Habits of Effective Teens” and have already learned about the first habit of “Be Proactive.” Students learned that they are responsible for their life and the difference between being proactive versus reactive. Students will continue to learn about the 7 Habits throughout the rest of the school year.

September 15th marked the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month and students will be learning about one notable Hispanic Heritage trail blazer each day they are in TA until the celebration wraps up October 15th.

If you are interested in seeing the TA lessons, they are posted to the KJMS All Students Course in Schoology. Once you have navigated to the main page of the course, there is a blue “TA Lessons” folder where you can find the lessons grouped by month.

When Should a Student Stay Home?

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. So when should your child stay home? Visit our site for helpful ideas regarding absences and how to work with your child and your school.

Whether students are absent because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss. Remember: Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

SR&R Signature Sheet Due September 30

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/caregiver with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/caregiver’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30.Visit the SIS Parentvue Account Overview page for help logging in to your account. Please contact us at 703-934-2400, if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.
