Check out what is happening at Orange Hunt this week: We were so thrilled to welcome Dr. Reid, our Superintendent, and School Board Representative Laura Jane Cohen to see all the fantastic learning happening at Orange Hunt. Dr. Reid got to use her German Language skills while doing math problem solving with our 6th graders in Frau Glaser's class afternoon class.
Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!
Thank you to all of the parents that were able to make it out last week to our Back to School Night. It is always an excellent evening when we get to connect and strengthening our partnerships for our students. We know some of you could not make it and just know we are always here to work together for your child. It looks to be one of our best years yet!
A special THANK YOU to our PTA for providing some caffeine and chocolate to brighten our day! If you have not already signed up for the PTA is it NOT too late. Be sure to join us virtually next week, Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 7:00pm for our first meeting. There will be many opportunities for you and your family to connect this year.

Virginia Growth Assessment
Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a new test required for students in grades 3-8. The state legislature introduced this requirement to measure student growth and progress within the school year in reading and mathematics.
For fall 2022, VGA will address content that was taught in the previous school year. The purpose of this fall’s VGA is to identify potential learning gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no “passing” or “failing” outcome for the VGA. Results will provide a starting point to measure growth and will offer information about areas of strength and areas for growth in reading and mathematics.
Students enrolled in grades 3-8 will generally take an assessment in both reading and mathematics. Here are the dates for the VGA assessments in Grades 3-6.
Please contact your child’s teacher, or the school testing coordinators at hmmathews@fcps.edu or kbaustin@fcps.edu with any questions.
Kiss and Ride Reminders
We are noticing some unsafe practices in the mornings and afternoons. It is important that you do NOT let your child out of the car until they reach the sidewalk near the building. Please read reminders below so we can keep everyone safe!
Morning Reminder:
In the morning, it is important that you arrive before the side doors close at 8:45am. Our staff has to report to their next assignment to work with our students. If you arrive after 8:45am you will need to park and walk your child into the building. It is important for your child to start their day on time. Many students feel unsettled and stressed if they are walking into their classrooms after the bell has rung and their class is already engaged in learning.
Afternoon Reminder:
We have a very busy afternoon at dismissal. We have adults and students not crossing at the crosswalks. This is very unsafe and we do not want anyone to be injured or seriously hurt. We expect families to use the official Kiss and Ride to pick up your child.
Below are the guidelines we ask you to follow to keep everyone safe at arrival and dismissal.
(8:20-8:45am & 3:35pm)
- Drop your child off only in the Kiss and Ride traffic pattern. Do not drop your child off on Sydenstricker Rd. or other areas around the school/neighborhood.
- Pull your car forward as far as possible in the line.
- Make sure that your child exits your car on the building side only.
- Do not pass other cars in line.
- Go directly to Sydenstricker Rd; do not use the bus access lane in front of the school.
AAP Information Sessions
Continuum of Services
Our virtual Parent Information Sessions will be held on September 20th at 9:00am and 5:30pm. During these sessions, we will provide information on the continuum of AAP services for all students at Orange Hunt ES. (Grades K-6) Both sessions will be identical so you can choose which one will work for you. Please contact our AART Jenny Weis if you plan to attend.
A Note from the Office
If your family has recently moved, it is important that we have up-to-date information for your student. There are 2 documents required for a change of address, your new deed/lease and complete a registration form for each of your student(s) to reflect the new address. Here is a link to the form: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/it19.pdf
When you hand this in, the front office will update the system and file paperwork in your student’s records. Please contact Lesley Hite at laakofiohite@fcps.edu or call 703-913-6800 if you need any help with this.
COVID/Health Updates
Please do not send your child to school if there are any signs or symptoms of being ill. We can keep students and staff healthy if we all do our part by staying home when not feeling well. The FCPS Health and Safety Guidance document continues to be updated with the latest information.
