Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Community,

I hope you had a chance to join us last night for our Virtual BTSN! The videos were awesome and I especially enjoyed learning a little bit about the staff outside of school. I love discovering people’s hidden talents!  One of the benefits of having a virtual BTSN night is that the videos can remain posted both in Schoology and on Youtube. If you were not available last night, here is the link to our virtual BTSN page.

Speaking of talent, our sports teams have been on a hot streak this week!  Thank you for coming out to cheer and support our student athletes in the many ways that you do. Remember, you can find out all you need to know about Woodson athletics at wtwoodsonsports.com, or follow our twitter feed @woodsonathletic. Check out these amazing stats from this week:

  • Football decisively won its last two games against Wakefield (37-7) and Falls Church (31-13).
  • Cross country took first place in 9th/10th grade and boys varsity cross country, as well as taking 3rd in the girls varsity cross country this past Saturday.
  • Field hockey and volleyball teams beat South County on Tuesday.
  • Golf won its match on Wednesday.

On Friday, September 23rd, we will be hosting Frost MS as well as our feeder elementary schools for our Feeder Night Football game against Lewis HS.  This is a huge event and a chance to connect with the youngest members of our Calvary. Go CAVS!

Today, we recognized a very special group of students (see first picture) with our CAV Kudos. The CAV Kudos program recognizes staff-nominated students who are building a great school culture one interaction at a time. Students were recognized for helping others by lending them a charger, assisting another student find their class, helping with cleaning up a water spill, and so much more. I want to thank our Systems of Support Advisors (SOSAs) Laura Totoro and John Scholla for organizing this excellent and impactful program!

Thank you to the PTSO for bringing in the supplies for our teachers! The PTSO dropped off paper towels, tissues, wipes, sharpies, dry erase markers, glue sticks, and more for teachers. I was told that the tissues vanished almost instantly, and the rest was gone shortly afterwards. If you haven’t already, please click here to join this wonderful organization!

I hope your family gets a chance to enjoy the wonderful weather this weekend and as always, please don’t hesitate to reach out!  kjgreata@fcps.edu

8. Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.

SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form found on the FCPS site to Student Services no later than Friday, September 30th.

An opt-out form must be submitted each school year.
