Clinical Team Email Is Now Up and Running

Lane’s Clinical Team now has a joint email address that parents and families can use to contact the entire team with just one message. That address is LaneClinicalTeam@fcps.edu.

Our Clinical Team – which includes counselors Dr. Perry and Ms. Corl, social worker Ms. DePina, and psychologist Ms. Mattioli – work together collaboratively as they support students and families. Please feel free to use this email address if you need assistance from any – or all – of them.

Never Forget. Engage in Service on Patriot Day

This Sunday, September 11, 2022 is the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Congress designated September 11th of each year as Patriot Day to commemorate those who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and onboard United Flight 93.

Never Forget Engage in Service on Patriot Day

Each year on this date, we remember the bravery shown, how we came together as a nation, and vow to never forget what happened on September 11, 2001, or those who lost their lives. There are many ways to honor 9/11 around your community and across the nation, including volunteer projects, moments of silence, and memorial runs.

Volunteer Fairfax will be kicking off VolunteerFest 2022 on September 11th, Patriot Day. VolunteerFest 2022 is a great way for students and families to engage in service.

Additional information can be found at 911Day.org and 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

Thank you for participating in the National Day of Service and Remembrance this Sunday, September 11th. May we come together as a community and may we never forget.

Volunteer Orientation Slides Now Online

We are very excited to be able to welcome our family volunteers back into the school full-strength this year. We have missed building that partnership with you! We appreciate any support you can provide and offer a variety of ways that you can help.

We do ask that all family members who’d like to volunteer complete an orientation that covers responsibilities and expectations. We enjoyed leading two in-person sessions these last two weeks, but we understand that not all potential volunteers were able to make it during the times it was offered. The slides presented during the in-person presentations are now posted on our school website. Please review them before scheduling your first day of volunteering.

Once you have reviewed the slides, please fill out our Lane Volunteer Form. Once that is complete you can reach out to your child’s teacher or others on staff to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

We hope to offer another session of the volunteer orientation virtually as well in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for the date and time.

Thank you for your cooperation and generous support!

“Making the Most of Your Parent-Teacher Conference” Presentation Video Posted

Our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, has created a short video of our presentation for parents and guardians entitled “Making the Most of Your Parent-Teacher Conference.” In it, she offers some tips and suggestions for how you can prepare for your upcoming conversation with your child’s teacher as well as things to keep in mind during the conference itself and for follow-up. You can view the video presentation here.

Your child’s teacher will be reaching out to you soon to schedule a time to talk. Your input is vitally important to us, because no one knows your child as well as you do. Sharing information and working together allows us to best support your child at school and offers great opportunities for you to learn how to support your child’s learning at home.

Fall Picture Day Is Thursday, September 29th!

Have your children start practicing their best smiles because Fall Picture Day is coming to Lane on Thursday, September 29th! Professional photographers will visit our school that day to take individual portraits of every student. These are the portraits that will appear in the school yearbook, which will be published at the end of the year. These picture packages must be ordered and paid for in advance. Look for flyers and order forms in Wednesday Folders next week.

We are looking for some volunteers to help that day, directing students and assisting photographers. Help is needed between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. If you are available and would like to help, please contact Ms. Solis Lopez in the Lane office at nmsolislopez@fcps.edu.

Lane Library Still Looking for Volunteers

Our librarian, Mrs. Chozick, is in need of volunteer help in the library. Most of the work will be shelving books (training will be provided); occasionally other help will be needed, like making copies or taking down displays, but expect to be shelving books most of the time.

If you can spare just one or two hours once a week, that would be splendid! As it is most helpful to have volunteers throughout the day and week, so that books can be continuously shelved, volunteer times are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please contact Mrs. Chozick at schozick@fcps.edu to let her know what times you might be available or if you should have any questions. Thanks so much for considering helping in the library!

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Parent Meeting, Thursday, September 22nd, 6 p.m.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide four levels of services. More information can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics.

You can learn more about AAP at Lane and in FCPS at a parent information session on Thursday, September 22nd at 6 p.m. in the Lane cafeteria. At this meeting Linda Simon, Lane’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, will provide information about the continuum of AAP services in Fairfax County as well as a brief overview of the screening process for both part-time and full-time AAP placement. This meeting is open to all interested parents with students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

You can also get additional information about the AAP program in the Fall Advanced Academics Newsletter.

Safety and Security Lockdown Videos and Parent Tips

Fairfax County Public Schools' main goal is to keep students and staff safe at school. Our crisis and emergency response plans have been cited as a national model. We continually work with county, state, and federal health, safety, and emergency personnel leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential threats. We also drill for emergency situations and then review and revise plans as needed.

Response contingencies to critical incidents are researched and tested through mandatory drills and functional exercises in all schools and centers. Two lockdown drills are conducted each school year in accordance with Virginia law as part of an FCPS comprehensive options-based approach to responding to potentially violent intruders in the facility or on school grounds. These mandatory drills and other safety-training programs are designed for all staff and students to provide for the safest possible school environment.

You can learn more about safety and security protocols and language by watching these two videos:

FCPS also provides information on its Frequently Asked Questions about Lockdown Drills page and in the document Parent/Guardian Tips to Support Students Before, During, and After Required Lockdown Drills.

If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on the FCPS website.
