Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you enjoyed the extended weekend and the beautiful weather it brought.

Dr. Michelle Reid, FCPS superintendent, will host a Community Conversation at Madison HS tonight from 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Language interpretation will be provided, as available, as well as child care and light refreshments. If you plan to attend, please register to attend.  We hope to see you there!

We look forward to seeing you this Thursday for Back To School Night.  This evening is for adults only and will allow you to spend time in your child’s classroom, meet their teacher and learn more about the year to come.  The schedule for the evening is below.

K-1: 5:00-5:45 pm

2-3: 6:00-6:45 pm

4-6: 7:00-7:45 pm

Our wonderful art teacher, Ms. Kinsey, will be on medical leave beginning next week and plans to return later this fall.   We have an outstanding sub that will be covering during her absence.

Today begins our week long food drive to stock our food pantry for our own community needs. Please send items with your children to be dropped off in the lobby or consider bringing an item or two to Back to School Night. We appreciate your generosity.

Please check your child's backpack for the Tuesday folder.  This folder often contains important information from the school, the PTA and from your child's teacher.  Today you should receive your ONE Campaign magnet.  We hope you will show your school and pyramid pride by displaying it on your car. #ONEKindActVienna

Peace.

Attendance Email

Please use this email MarshallRoadElem.Attendance@fcps.edu to let the office know when your child will be late, leaving early, absent or has a change of dismissal.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

If you have not already returned these forms, you can return the hard copies to the school with your student or submit the Emergency Care Information Form through weCare@school (weCare).

Parent Digital Resources Consent Form

Every student must have parental consent BEFORE they can use certain digital resources.  To provide your parental consent for each student in your family, please use this link and follow the provided directions.  This can also be done from your ParentVue account when you log in.  Click here for more information, including the list of digital resources used at Marshall Road.

Students Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibilities Booklet now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS).  The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R.  Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R.  Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.  Please contact the main office if you have any questions.

2022-23 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms

This Opt-Out booklet includes opt-out forms that you should submit to your child’s school principal if you do not want your student to participate in a given activity. If you have no objection to the activities described in this booklet, DO NOT sign or submit any of the forms.

PTA Update

Registration is Open for Fall Enrichment Classes

The MRES PTA is excited to offer a full lineup of before-school classes including some favorites (Fitness Warriors!) as well as lots of new options.  You can view class descriptions on our enrichment website.  Registration opened today at 7:00 am and will close on Tuesday, September 13 at 9:00 pm.  Classes will start the week of September 19.  Financial aid scholarships are available when you register.  Email Cheryl (enrichment@marshallroadpta.org) with questions.

Food4Thought (F4T) Donations & Volunteers Needed

The Marshall Road weekend food program, F4T, is resuming in September and we need items to sustain our support for families throughout the school year.  If you can help students in the Vienna community with a donation, we would be most grateful.

The most needed items are Chef Boyardee meals, cheese sandwich crackers, juice boxes, and gently used plastic grocery bags.  Items can be placed in the F4T bin in the lobby by students during the week of September 6-9 and by adults at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 8. Items can also be donated via our Amazon wish list found here: https://tinyurl.com/roadrunnerfood.

For other ways to donate contact Krista Davidson, school social worker at kmdavidson@fcps.edu or via telephone at 703-937-1556 or see the Marshall Road PTA website at https://marshallroadpta.memberhub.com/w/support.

We need a few additional volunteers who are available to prepare bags of food for children to take home for the weekend.  Volunteers would be needed approximately twice a month on either Wednesday or Thursday for between 1 and 1½ hours during the school day.  If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Lisa Kelso or Erin Lebbin at Food4Thought@marshallroadpta.org.

Join us for our First Walking Wednesday of the School Year

We are kicking off Walking Wednesdays on Wednesday, September 7th!   Walking promotes health, fitness, and time together.  It also alleviates traffic congestion during the busy morning drop-offs.  Can’t walk your child all the way from home?  Feel free to park at Vienna Aquatic Club and walk from there!

The PTA will be handing out punch cards at doors 3 and 7 for students who walk or bike to school.  If a student participates in at least 6 Walking Wednesdays during the year, they will be entered into a raffle for a prize at the end of the year.  If you would like to volunteer to hand out and mark punch cards, please sign up here

Runathon Sponsorships and Volunteers – Help Support our Biggest Fundraiser!

Do you have a business?  Are you looking for a fantastic, local advertising opportunity?  Sponsor the Marshall Road Elementary Runathon and have YOUR logo on 1,000 shirts!  Your business’ support through a tax-deductible donation will assist us in purchasing a t-shirt for every student, faculty member, and volunteer for this event!  T-shirt space is available with two levels of sponsorship.  Email Renee at runathon@marshallroadpta.org to learn more and secure your spot on this year's t-shirt.

We also need volunteers to help make this event a success.  The Runathon will be held November 10, so planning is already underway.  We need your help obtaining sponsors, prizes, and more.  Fill out this Google form to let us know how you might be interested in getting involved.

Save the Date for Marshall Road’s Fall Family Picnic

Join us on Friday, September 23 from 5:30-7:30 pm for our Fall Family Picnic!  This is a chance to enjoy time together with the Marshall Road community.  We will have music by School of Rock, food for sale, and activities for the students.  This event will be held outdoors on the fields behind the school, and all are welcome.

COVID Diagnostic Testing

COVID-19 diagnostic testing is available at no cost for all currently enrolled FCPS students on select dates throughout the year when transmission may be highest. Diagnostic testing is provided at designated times and locations for those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19.  Testing will be available September 6-8 and 12-14. Visit the testing website for information on locations and how to register for an appointment.

Attendance Message

  •   Take a look at the FCPS Calendar:

Ensure that any trips that you have planned for the school year are on weekends and school holidays.  Every day of learning is a day toward success.

  • If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to the school.  You may submit information via MarshallRoadElem.Attendance@fcps.edu[ or 703-937-1515.  We appreciate your collaboration in scheduling appointments outside of school hours, when possible.
  • If you know in advance that your child will miss school, please complete and submit the Prearranged Absence Form.  Forms must be submitted in advance to allow adequate time for administrative review.  When planning trips, please keep in mind that absences add up quickly, and students who are absent 10 percent of the school year, or just two days per month, are considered “chronically absent.”

Did you know?

  • Students should miss no more than nine days of school each year to stay engaged, successful, and on track to graduation.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully, or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
  • By 6th grade, absenteeism (defined as missing 18 days per school year) is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
  • By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
  • Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student’s academic success.
  • Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks.
  • Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job.
