Back to School Night

ATES Families,

I hope you are having a wonderful beginning of the school year. Back to School Night will be on Thursday, September 8, 2022 from 5:30PM – 7:00PM. Each grade level will present 2 sessions to accommodate families with more than one elementary aged child. Families with children in the PreK/Head Start program have had home visits and orientation so their teachers will not be presenting at Back to School Night.

Links to the presentations will be shared in the Community Updates later this week for families who were unable to attend BTSN.

Our wonderful PTA will be available out front during BTSN. You can sign up to become a member, buy spirit wear and even purchase some dinner. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Annandale Terrace Elementary School PTA.

For your convenience, the clinic will be open for families that need to drop off medications or talk to our heath aide.

If you have any questions, please contact the main office.

Sincerely,

Cindi Choate, Andrew Pratt, & Latriece Pettie

FLE Parent Preview

Students in grades K-5 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher.   Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit.  Students in grades 4 and 5 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit.  For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in multiple locations.

  • Online in Schoology - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights for.  Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library.
    • Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.
  • Your child’s school.  Please contact the school to schedule a time to review lessons and/or media.
    • We will also offer a Family Life Education Preview Night in early winter.
  • City of Fairfax Regional Library – lessons only.  Media is not available.
  • Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s orientation packet at the beginning of the school year or you may access the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.  If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s school principal in writing before instruction begins.
  • An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for students who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.
  • Instruction occurs at various times during the school year.  Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges he/she will be facing in the next few years.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Parent/Guardian Signature

Parents/guardians are required to sign the SR&R annually.  They can download and digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement in ParentVUE.  Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will be prompted to digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement upon login until the acknowledgement has been signed.  The name in the digital signature box must match the parent’s or guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted. Schools will be provided with a resource sheet to assist parents/guardians in using ParentVUE to sign the SR&R acknowledgement.

While use of ParentVUE to digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement is preferred, parents/guardians may elect to download and print the SR&R Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet   from the FCPS public website.  If a parent/guardian needs assistance accessing the signature sheet, they may contact their child’s school and ask that the school provide the form.  The SR&R Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet is due September 30, 2022

Immunization requirement

As we begin to look ahead to the 2022-23 school year, I encourage everyone to Be Wise, Immunize! Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep children protected from many diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood immunizations during recent years of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and protect them from serious diseases.

I encourage you to check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2022-23 school year as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, you can make an appointment with your healthcare provider or visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of child immunization clinics.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations and bring that to Annandale Terrace Elementary School as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact the main office at 703-658-5600.

Required: Consent for Digital Resources

Digital consent

Our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. Additionally, Included on this page is a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.

Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
