Message from Mr. Greata

Dear Woodson Community,

Community has been the theme this week!  During this week’s senior meetings, our student services staff presented important information regarding graduation, college visits to our school, cap and gown information, and guidance on how to successfully navigate senior year. As I watched the presentation and reflected on the growth students experience on their K-12 journey, I was reminded of the energy and effort it takes from the entire school community to prepare students for their post graduation path. It is truly awe-inspiring!

Speaking of graduation, Woodson will be graduating the class of 2023 at EagleBank Arena on Tuesday, June 6th, at 7:30 pm. I have included a graduation starter kit at the end of this message that includes additional dates to save, places to find information, and ways to get involved. I want to thank our senior class administrator, Dr. Disalvo, as well as our senior class sponsors, Mr. Schneider and Mrs. Pollack, for their commitment to making this a great senior year. I also want to give a big shout out to Katie Clinton, a parent and PTSO member, who has volunteered to lead the planning for the Cav Cruise, our all night grad party!

Tonight is our first home football game and Military Appreciation Night!  Wear your camo and join us in celebrating the military members of our community while we cheer on our team to victory. The game starts at 7:00 pm!

As the 21st anniversary of 9/11 is this Sunday, our school took time to remember and honor the victims, families, heroes, and survivors of 9/11, and the courage and determination of our nation's first responders. For the Woodson community, there was not only a national and global impact from those tragic events, but for many in the community, there was also a very personal one. I appreciate all of the community members that have reached out to share their personal stories with me during this time of remembrance.

Thank you all again for welcoming me into this wonderful community and please do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything!  kjgreata@fcps.edu

Hope to see you all at our first home football game tonight – Go CAVS!

Mr. Greata
Acting Principal

We have been advised by Fairfax City Public Works that the far right lane on eastbound Main Street between Whitacre and just past Pickett Road will be closed due to sidewalk replacement starting on Monday, September 12th.

2. Home Football Game Information

As we prepare for our first home varsity football game of the season on Friday, September 9th versus Wakefield, we want to remind you that the following guidelines are in effect to ensure that all of our patrons, students and parents enjoy the true spirit of the event:

  • Varsity Football Games start at 7pm.  Ticket gates open at 6pm. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the gate or ahead of time through this E-tix link.
  • Woodson High School (including the parking lots) is a drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free zone.  Adults and students who are determined to be in violation of regulations restricting the possession or being under the influence of drugs, alcohol and/or tobacco will be dealt with accordingly, including being subject to arrest by police.
  • Representatives from the Fairfax County Police Department, the Woodson Administration, and the Woodson Security Staff will continue to monitor the activities of our patrons in the parking lot, at the ticket gate, and inside the stadium to promote a safe and secure environment for both Woodson fans, our visitors and guests.
  • Patrons will not be allowed to enter the stadium with athletic equipment such as bats, balls, sticks, etc.
  • Backpacks are not allowed.  Everyone entering the stadium is subject to search.
  • Patrons will not be allowed to enter the stadium with containers such as water bottles, cups, cans, etc.
  • For varsity football games, once you pay and enter the stadium you may not leave and reenter. Please plan accordingly.
  • We play teams from different districts, counties and regions. Ticket prices will vary. The Patriot District currently charges $5.00 for adults and students at all home games. The Patriot District consists of Woodson, Fairfax, West Springfield and South County High Schools as well as Lake Braddock and Robinson Secondary Schools.
  • Woodson HS students and parents are asked to demonstrate good citizenship and spirited sportsmanship to our opponents and their fans.  Any clothing that includes negative references to opposing teams/schools will not be tolerated. The Woodson Cavalry is considered the best fans in Virginia! Let’s show everyone that we are #Cavstrong.
  • We welcome all members of the community to attend our games, but we ask parents attend and monitor middle and elementary aged students.  All attendees, regardless of age, are expected to behave responsibly.

Thank you in advance for making this a great event for all!  We are #oneWoodson!

The dance begins at 9:15pm or at the end of the football game (whichever comes first) and ends promptly at 11:00pm

Admission is collected at the door.

4. Virtual Back to School Night

Cav Kickoff was the first part of “Back to School Night” to say hello to teachers, put faces with names and to see the classrooms your child(ren) have this year.

The second part of “Back to School Night” will be curriculum videos which will be posted by Thursday, September 15th.  You’ll be able to access these from our webpage and we will send out notification when it is live.

These videos will give you an idea of what the course content is, class expectations and best methods of communication.

5. Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.

SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form found on the FCPS site to Student Services no later than Friday, September 30th.

8. Understanding the Dangers of Opioid Use

As we begin the 2022-23 school year, public schools nationwide face a growing student wellness crisis. Our students' wellness challenges impact their ability to perform at their best in the classroom and may lead to other destructive behaviors.

In Northern Virginia, the opioid epidemic continues to impact communities including young adults, and sometimes school-age children. Tragically, this can lead to devastating outcomes. There are three things you can do now, to support student wellness and increase understanding of the dangers of opioids and fentanyl:

  • Talk with children and loved ones in your life about the dangers of drug use, especially opioids. For more information, tips on how to recognize and prevent substance abuse, and available support services, watch this webinar.
  • Safely store and dispose of medications to prevent drug misuse.
  • Sign up for a Virtual REVIVE! training class to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and administer naloxone nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.

Learn more about the dangers of opioids and available resources on our website. Visit the Student Safety and Wellness webpage for more information about a variety of topics related to student wellbeing.

13. Notification of Testing - Math and Reading Inventory

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) uses the Math Inventory and Reading Inventory with students in grades 7-12 to determine students’ strengths and needs in mathematics and literacy.

  • Students enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Algebra Functions and Data Analysis will participate in the Math Inventory (MI).
  • Students enrolled in English 9-12 will participate in the Reading Intervention (RI).

The purpose of these assessments is to identify students who may benefit from additional support with literacy and mathematics skills. In addition, school teams will consider assessment results as they plan instruction for your student.

The assessments are administered during the month of September. Depending on grade level and initial performance, students may participate in follow-up assessment in the winter and/or in the spring. Additional information about these assessments can be found at the following webpages:

If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s English or mathematics teacher.

14. Family Life Education - Information and Opt-Out Forms

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

If you would like to view the FLE materials, please fill out this form Blair Smith, Director of Student Activities, will set up a time for you to come in and view hard copies for each grade level of FLE materials.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, please complete the opt-out forms located on the FCPS website. Completed opt-out forms can be returned to the school main office.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Carrie Reynolds, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at cfreynolds@fcps.edu.

15. Student Parking Passes

Parking passes for the 2022-23 school year are available for purchase online only. The cost for a full-year parking pass is $200.00.

There are 2 steps to purchase a student parking pass:

  • Parking Permit Application
  • Payment on MySchoolBucks (navigate to the School Store, select the option for a parking permit, and check out.  Please print your receipt and bring with you when picking up your permit.)

Enforcement will begin on Monday, September 12th. Student Parking Pass Website.

16. Forgotten Items & Lost and Found

Q - My son/daughter forgot their lunch/homework assignment/laptop.  Where can I drop off items?

A– Forgotten items may be dropped off at the main office on a designated bookshelf.  Please make sure your child's name is written on the item.

Q - My son/daughter lost their wallet (or any item).  Where should I go to see if it has been turned in?

A – You may come to the main office and a Safety and Security assistant will escort you to the Lost and Found room to search for your item.

17. Food Deliveries

Please reinforce with your child that ordering from a delivery service during school is not allowed.

If your student forgets their lunch, parents or guardians can bring lunch and drop it off in the main office.

Students will often have a delivery driver come to an entrance other than Door 1, which compromises the safety of the entire school. Our office staff does not have the time to accept food deliveries and will not open the doors for Uber Eats, GrubHub or any other service.
