Labor Day Holiday

A message from Principal, Amy Miller:

Dear Kilmer Families,

We had a great second week of school. Students are well into their curriculum. The seventh graders are learning about watersheds. This week the students had the opportunity to get outside and do a watershed walk around the Kilmer grounds.During these walks the students made observations and mapped out the watershed. Their unit will culminate with a MWEE (Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience) field trip.

It was fun to join some of the eighth grade English classes in which students are getting ready to dive into their first text of the year. Students will be using a TQE (thought, question, epiphany) strategy to actively engage with the text and to analyze the author’s craft.

We are looking forward to Back to School Night which is on Wednesday, September 14. Please see below for additional details.

Have a fun and safe long weekend!

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

Kilmer Family Liaison

Jessica Rosas Diego is our new Family Liaison. Family liaisons work in the schools and community to help families get the information and assistance they need to support their children and to ensure their academic success. The family liaisons represent a variety of cultures, languages, and races. Family liaisons will welcome and orient families who are new to the school and community, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can also help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family involvement to help ensure their student's success. Jessica is fluent in Spanish. She can be contacted by email  jrosasdiego@fcps.edu or by phone (703) 846-8890.

Attendance

It is important that your child attends school every day FCPS is in session unless he or she is sick or needs to be excused for a specific reason. If parent contact is not made, a note should be sent to the school with the student upon return. When parent contact is made, absences will be recorded as excused. If parent contact is not made within 48 hours, the absences will be recorded as unexcused. To report a student absent, please complete our online attendance form or call 703.846.8888 by 7:30 am to notify the Front Office if your student will be absent or arriving late to school. This form is designed for unplanned absences, late arrivals, and short-term prearranged absences only.

Wednesday, September 14 - Back to School Night, 5:00 - 7:00 pm

On this night, parents will have an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers, school counselor, and administrators. Back to School Night will be an in-person event. During Back to School Night, parents and guardians will rotate through their child’s schedule and learn about the curriculum in each course. Parents will attend each class for 10 minutes. Between 4:45-5:00, parents and guardians will view video messages from the School Board, Kilmer’s Parent Teacher Association, and Kilmer Administration. Opening messages will take place in first period. Teacher presentations will begin at 5:00 pm.

Health and PE

Students in grades 7-8 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their health and physical education course.  Students receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit.  For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle.

We will be holding a Parent/Guardian FLE preview night from 4pm-5pm on September 14th in the Kilmer gym (this is the hour before back to school night).

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in the Kilmer All Parents & Guardians schoology group.

o    Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and    password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle and send to your student’s counselor. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for students who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction of both FLE units will take place during the 3rd quarter.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Hecht at jdhecht@fcps.edu.
