Principal's Corner
Dear Garfield Family,
This week, our Garfield students continued to practice routines and procedures while getting to know one another! It was so nice to see students engaged in rich learning tasks across the school.
We will begin to share information about our Parent Coffees coming to a neighborhood near you! We value the partnership we have with families and community members. We are excited to share about our future events in collaboration with our PTA.
Please be sure to send in your emergency care and health forms for your student. If you have any specific concerns, please share directly with their teacher as well. Enjoy your holiday weekend! We will see you on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
Warm regards,
Principal April Cage

School Security and Safety
We take the security of our students and our staff very seriously. All exterior doors are locked during the school day. Visitors are to ring the bell at Door 1 to gain access to the main office. Every visitor/adult who enters the building is monitored.
All visitors walking into Garfield ES must ring the doorbell, state their name and purpose of the visit, and come to the office with a valid driver’s license to sign in using the Visitor Management System (VMS). The VMS will issue each visitor a sticker that should always be worn when in the building.
To maintain the momentum of instruction, items brought to the office during school hours (lunch, supplies, homework, etc.) will be held in the office for students to pick up.
Buses and Delays
Please be aware that all of us are getting used to new routines at the start of the school year. Thank you for your patience as those routines are established. If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. E-Notify (School Messenger) email messages will also be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2150. For any concerns after hours (after 5:30 p.m.), contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

2022-23 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights
Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.
In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices.
Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

FCPS Updated Cell Phone Policy
Updates to SR&R includes new guidance on student use of cell phones. The new section on cell phones prohibits cell phone use in classrooms. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class.
Students in grades K-6: Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. Teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities when appropriate. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
Parents should talk to their child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations for this upcoming school year. Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users. More information about the SR&R is available online.
Title I
Title I is the nation’s largest assistance program for schools. It provides funding to supplement educational opportunities for children who are most at risk and increasing student achievement in schools selected on the basis of the economic level of families. The primary focus is to ensure student access to provide all children significant opportunities to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps.

You are invited to join a Virtual Town Hall, hosted by Title I on September 20th. You will receive an email with the link via e-notify as we get closer to the date.

Consent Needed for Select Digital Resources!
Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your permission before they can be used. These resources have been investigated by FCPS and meet federal guidelines. Our teachers would love to get started as soon as possible. Please find our school’s list of the resources and a link to provide digital consent on our website. You will need to know your child’s Student ID and your enrolling email address.
School Forms and Registration

It’s important for parents to complete all required school forms. Returning families in grades PreK-6 must complete the following forms yearly:
- Health Information
- Emergency Care Information
- Identification of Military Connected Students
Families can get a jumpstart on the continuing enrollment forms by clicking here. If you prefer to wait, the forms will be sent home with your child in the first day of school packet for families to complete and return to school.
If your child is starting kindergarten or if you are new to Garfield Elementary, please know that all school registration forms must be completed in order to receive class placement. Electronic forms for new students can be found here. Parents who have questions about registering in Fairfax County Public Schools can visit the FCPS website for additional information.
If you have any questions regarding registration, please contact our registrar, Sarah Rothman, at sgrothman1@fcps.edu or call 703-923-2900 for an appointment.
Text Messages
Parents can receive text messages from FCPS for Emergencies and Essential Information
Make sure your cell phone numbers are listed in the parent/guardian contact information section on the emergency care information form for each of your children. Parents and guardians can view and update emergency contact information online using weCare@school.
Text messages will be sent in the event of emergencies, delays or school closings, if buses are running more than 30 minutes late, if your student missed the morning attendance deadline, and for other important reminders.
Standard message and data charges may apply for text messages depending on your cell phone service plan. More about text messages is available online.
