September 2022: Welcome Back to School!

Dear Dranesville Families,

I have had a wonderful time visiting the Dranesville schools for welcome back to school events. I have attended a variety of school events- cookouts, back to school nights, resource fairs and school visits. I have been wowed by the excitement across the school communities- staff, students, and families. Thank you to everyone who helps build a successful school day--the bus drivers, teachers, nutritional staff, custodians, and more. I look forward to seeing you at a school visit next week and throughout the fall.  Thank you to our administrators and PTAs for putting on so many successful and well-attended back to school events.

Please make sure to join Dr. Reid on her Superintendent Community Conversations. She is coming to our HS pyramids to learn about our communities and learn what your priorities are. The meetings are for all schools within the high school pyramid.  Translation services and child care are available when you register. See below for the Dranesville HS pyramid dates and look for an email from your student’s school to register. I hope to see our McLean families at the McLean HS meeting on Sept. 8th.

We are still having some Dranesville bus issues, but there is improvement each day. I hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends.

Elaine

Text Messages for Parents

Parents can receive text messages from FCPS for emergencies and essential information. Text messages will be sent in the event of emergencies, delays or school closings, if buses are running more than 30 minutes late, if your student missed the morning attendance deadline, and for other important reminders. Make sure your cell phone numbers are listed in the parent/guardian contact information section on the emergency care information form for each of your children. Standard message and data charges may apply for text messages depending on your plan. More about text messages is available online.

Bus Delay Notification System

Please be aware that all of us are getting used to new routines at the start of the school year. Thank you for your patience as those routines are established. If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. E-Notify (School Messenger) email messages will also be sent to announce significant bus delays. For questions or concerns, contact the Transportation Office at 703-249-7000.  For any concerns after hours (after 5:30 p.m.), contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

Visit the FCPS Transportation page for more information.

Area Traffic Projects

Please be aware of the major roadway construction projects in Dranesville. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in the area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia.

495 NEXT

With school now back, the project team urges Langley High School, Cooper Middle School, and Churchill Road Elementary School students and parents to pay extra attention when approaching and traveling through work zones. Unlike normal road conditions, work zones involve large equipment, traffic pattern changes, lane closures, uneven pavement and variable speed limits.

If you have any questions or concerns, please visit www.495NEXT.org;  send an email to  495NorthernExtension@VDOT.Virginia.gov; or call the Project Inquiry Line: 703-592-6430.

Route 7

Please see the related traffic alerts and updated list of lane closures. Use caution and be alert to work zone signs, potential flagger or police direction, and watch for traffic shifts. Slow-moving vehicles and equipment may be entering or exiting the road. For information on intersection movements at the completion of the construction along Route 7, please see the interactive map on the project website. For questions: visit http://connectroute7.org; send an email to connectroute7@vdot.virginia.gov; or call: 833-777-7411.

George Washington Parkway

Drivers should proceed with caution in these areas and consider using alternate routes.

  • All northbound closures will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
  • All southbound closures will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

All work is weather dependent, and closures are subject to change. Concurrent northbound and southbound closures and maximizing survey crews minimizes the duration of lane closures. For more information, visit the National Park Service North Parkway Rehabilitation project website.

Traffic Safety

The Fairfax County Police Department and Fairfax County Public Schools would like to remind everyone how we can work together to ensure that everyone has a safe school year: Fairfax County Public Schools runs more than 1,600 buses daily. While it may be tempting if you’re in a hurry, it is never OK to pass a school bus, speed through a school zone or ignore a crossing guard’s direction

School Buses

Visuals of School Bus traffic laws

Many drivers get confused about when they have to stop and when they can pass a school bus with flashing lights. Drivers must stop when the red lights are flashing on a school bus when there are no raised medians or walls between their travel lanes and the school bus. Police follow school buses and are ready to issue reckless driving tickets. The penalty includes $2,500 in fines and loss of your license for six months and up to 180 days in jail.

Crossing Guards

Heeding the whistles and waves of our dedicated crossing guards is yet another way you can ensure the safety of students. Pay attention in crossing guard zone areas as you drive.

Speed Limits

Slow down and be alert for children, walking or biking; they may be difficult to see and may appear suddenly and unexpectedly. School zones are marked with 25 MPH flashing signs. These flashing lights start 30 minutes prior to the start of school and remain on 30 minutes after dismissal. Do not ignore those signs; even if you do not see children crossing!

Stop Signs

Stop Signs are installed at locations where a full stop is necessary for everyone’s safety. A full stop means that your wheels stop turning and you feel the weight of your vehicle shift. Always assume that the pedestrian is going to cross whether they have the right-of-way or not. Parents should remind their children that they need to make sure cars have stopped before entering the street, and to wait for crossing guards to wave them across a guarded crossing.

Safe Stopping

Some drivers stop in the middle of the roadway to load and unload passengers. This is extremely dangerous, especially if children exit on the roadway side of a vehicle. State Law does not allow loading and unloading of passengers from a roadway. Please load and unload children in the designated Kiss and Ride locations, or from designated, safe parking locations. Tickets may be issued for illegal parking in and around schools because of the safety issues that are created.

Seatbelts

State Law requires everyone 17 and under to be seat-belted at all times. This is especially important for children. The short drive from home to school may be the time when an accident occurs. Children need to be seat-belted until the car reaches its location and has fully stopped. Children should not be in the habit of removing seat belts because they “see the school” or because they are “almost there.” Drivers CAN be stopped for unbelted children and ticketed.

freee/reducedmeals

Free and Reduced Price Meal Applications

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students has expired meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.

No Dogs on School Grounds

With the exception of service animals, dogs are not allowed on school district grounds, playgrounds or sports fields at any time throughout the calendar year. Please leave your pets at home when coming to school.

Health and Safety

COVID updates

FCPS sent an update on COVID-19 layered prevention strategies that will continue to be in place this school year. While we had hoped that the pandemic would be behind us, it seems that COVID will be something we must manage as a community for the foreseeable future. FCPS will continue to follow the guidance of national, state, and local health experts when determining the layered prevention strategies that are needed to keep our schools safe and open for learning. To stay up to date, please continue to review our Health and Safety Guidance on our website.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.

Monkeypox Guidance and Information

With the emerging concerns regarding the monkeypox virus, we want to provide you with information about the precautions that FCPS is taking in partnership with the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). VIsit our website to review the complete FCPS Monkeypox Guidance and Information
