Principal's Message

91

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We had another amazing week together here at Shrevewood! We welcomed our new PreK students and enjoyed seeing their smiles throughout the building. Our students and teachers are working together and getting used to their classroom structures and routines, and having fun with their learning! We are continuing our focus on building strong classroom communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Next Friday, September 9th, we will be having a SWES Spirit Day! Our staff will be wearing our Shrevewood gear and we encourage your children to wear Shrevewood gear or our school colors (blue and white)!

We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable long Labor Day weekend! We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, September 6th.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Picture Day - September 15

Save the date for our picture day on Thursday, September 15th. More details will be sent soon! We are in need of parent volunteers to help throughout the day to assist the Lifetouch staff. If you are interested in volunteering, please email our office assistant, Vicky Vien at vvien@fcps.edu.

Positivity Project

opm

This past week, our school community focused in our Positivity Project morning meetings on the Other People Mindset. Our classroom communities will continue these conversations throughout the year as we explore the 24 character strengths together.

The mission of the Positivity Project is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships by understanding, appreciating, and exemplifying the character strengths in us all. People who have strong positive relationships do five things consistently - these are the five practices of the Other People Mindset. 1. Recognize the good in other people, 2. Recognize that everything you say or do affects other people, 3. Support others when they struggle, 4. Cheer people on when they succeed, 5. Remain present when giving people your attention. People who have a strong Other People Mindset are able to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with others.

COVID/Health Updates for Families

Please do not send your child to school if there are any signs or symptoms of being ill. We can keep students and staff healthy if we all do our part by staying home when not feeling well. The  FCPS Health and Safety Guidance document continues to be updated with the latest information and guidance for families.

Opt-Out Flier Now Online

The 2022-23 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms flier is now online . The Spanish version is also available. Other translations will be added as they become available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/opt-out-forms.

Please note that this is not the Family Life Education (FLE) opt-out. This flier provides information for parents on FCPS’ policies regarding:

  • Parents’ rights to inspect, and to consent or opt out, before their child participates in certain surveys administered to students.
  • Parents’ rights to inspect instructional materials used as part of the educational curriculum.
  • FCPS’ maintenance, retention, and disclosure rules regarding student scholastic records including parents and eligible students’ rights to inspect such records, to request amendment to such records and to opt out of disclosure of directory information about the student.
  • FCPS’ disclosure of student information for graduation photographs or other commercial purposes and the right of parents and eligible students to opt out of this disclosure.
  • FCPS’ disclosure of secondary school students’ names, addresses, and telephone numbers to military recruiters and the right of parents and students to opt out of this disclosure.
  • Parents’ right to opt out of any physical examination of their child not required by state law.
  • The FCPS school counseling program and parents’ right to opt out their child from participation in academic, career, and/or social or emotional counseling.
  • Student participation in the Library Equity Access Pass Project, and the rights of parents to refuse participation in the program.
  • Parents’ rights to opt out of their child’s access to Tutor.com.
  • Student participation in the Social and Emotional Learning Screener and the rights of parents to opt out of the Screener.
  • The process by which parents and students may file complaints if they believe their rights as referenced above have been violated.

SR&R Reminder

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

srr

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Please email our Assistant Principal, Katie Vandawalker at kmvandawalke@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Student Birthday Policy

As an administrative team we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.

Kiss & Ride Registration and Procedures

ksr

In order to streamline our Kiss and Ride process, you must register your child(ren) so that you are assigned a kiss and ride number.

Once you register, you will receive a laminated number to display in the front window of your car and your child(ren) will receive a number for their backpacks. We will use the numbers at dismissal in order for students to be dismissed when their ride arrives. Each family only needs to fill out the registration one time.

Thank you so much for your help in ensuring a safe, smooth, and speedy dismissal for all Shrevewood students!

Below are our general guidelines for entering Kiss & Ride safely and respectfully:

  1. Students need to be able to enter and exit the vehicle from the passenger side (right) of the vehicle.  It is not safe to have children walk around to the driver side.
  2. Parents/Guardians are requested to remain in the vehicle as school staff will open doors.
  3. Students cannot load or unload outside of the Kiss & Ride lane that is marked with orange cones.
  4. Please be patient in the first few weeks, as logistics with student numbers may lend to longer wait times.

Breakfast & Lunch Reminders

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast and lunch are NO longer provided at no cost.  Breakfast will be $1.75.  Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60. Breakfast and lunch will be served beginning the first day of school.  Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com.  You can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://fcps.nutrislice.com/menu/shrevewood-elementary.

Free and Reduced-Price Status

Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September.  A new application must be filled out each new school year and forms are available online now: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/food-and-nutrition-programs/free-and-reduced-price-meals.  Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.

Room Parent Sign Up

The 2022 - 2023 school year is here! Do you want to get involved in the Shrevewood Community and help classroom teachers at the same time? Sign up to be a Room Parent!

What is a Room Parent? A Room Parent can be any adult caregiver or family member interested in helping a specific class.

Each classroom will have one or more parent/adult volunteer(s) that will help make life easier (and sometimes more fun!) for the classroom teachers.  Some possible examples: getting the word out about PTA events, helping teachers find volunteers when needed, celebrating birthdays/Teacher Appreciation Week and more!

You can use this link to sign up: https://forms.gle/5wqr2wfVM5mvyt9e8.  If you have any questions, reach out to Emily Gillotte, the Room Parent Coordinator, at ShrevewoodRoomParents@gmail.com.

Back to School Picnic

Help kick off the new school year at the PTA’s Back to School Picnic on Friday, September 9th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. (If it rains, we’ll reschedule for the following Friday, September 16th.)

A DJ will spin some tunes while you set up your picnic blankets/chairs for an outdoor dinner with Shrevewood students, staff, and families. Bring your own food or enjoy PAKOS Fresh Mex Food Truck (pre-order or walk-up; accepting cash or credit). Then, stop by the Kona Ice truck for a refreshing shaved ice treat!

In order to make this event a success, we need your help! Please sign up to help with set up, clean up, or prize table.

*Always head to shrevewoodpta.org for all sign ups and information!

PTA Staff Potluck

Help us provide some yummy food for our hardworking staff before Back to School night! Sign up to bring food so that teachers can eat and prepare for the evening. Please read the directions carefully: bring labeled food to school between 4:30 and 4:45 on September 13 and deliver it to the conference room. Thanks for your support in showing our appreciation for our staff!

Digital Resources Parent Permission

digres

Fairfax County Public Schools provides access to digital resources to maximize learning opportunities and protect student privacy. Each FCPS digital resource has had an instructional and technical review. Information about the educational technology tools approved for use within FCPS can be found in the online Digital Ecosystem Library

In order for students use certain applications at school, parents need to sign the Digital Consent form. After reviewing the resources, please complete this form to indicate whether or not your student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this school year.

Paperless Opt-Outs Available!

As a part of our ongoing efforts to streamline paper processes, parents can now select a number of opt-out’s electronically via ParentVUE.  Once you have signed into your ParentVUE account, simply select the “Student Info” tab and click on “Edit Information.” You will find opt-outs listed there.  Parents that do not have a ParentVUE account will still be able to use paper forms for notification. If you need to set up your ParentVUE account, you can create one online via the FCPS ParentVUE Registration page.
