Dear Woodburn Families,

Week two is in the books! The building is alive with readers selecting books to enjoy, writers drafting stories and mathematicians sharing their thinking.  Students are making art, playing "Builders and Bulldozers" in PE, and much more. Our classroom communities are strong and we look forward to all that is to come in week three.

Our first PTA meeting will be held next Thursday. We hope you will join us to learn about the engaging events and plans our PTA has outlined for the year. Information about our Title I program will also be shared.

We hope all of our families take the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See you on Tuesday, September 6.

Together We Grow,

Katy & Elizabeth

Back to School Night - Sept. 15

Our Back to School Night will be held on September 15 from 6-7:30pm.  Parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to connect with their child's teacher and learn about the following:

  • A Day in the Life of Your Child
  • Grade Level Curriculum Overview
  • Staying Connected
  • Our Family/School Partnership

Families will also have time to connect with our specialists and resource teachers.

Arts Integration at Woodburn

At Woodburn, we value integrating the arts into our teaching and learning.  Many of our specialists are skilled at using arts-focused approaches within their lessons and a core group of our teachers have also participated in learning about different art strategies. We have previously partnered with the Kennedy Center and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra to support these efforts.  This year, we have decided to not renew our partnership with the Kennedy Center but will maintain our strong partnership with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra.  Students will participate in the FSO's annual Link Up event and other opportunities afforded to us through the symphony.  Our teachers will continue to use arts strategies that align with our curriculum as we remain innovative, creative, and arts-focused.  We are excited to continue this work and look for new ways to maintain our focus on the fine and communicative arts.

Attendance Matters

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow! The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

Title I Parent Advisory Committee

We are looking for two parents to represent Woodburn on the 2022-2023 Title I Parent Advisory Committee (TPAC). Representatives will have the opportunity to learn more about the Title I grant in Fairfax County and family engagement initiatives taking place in other schools. Representatives are asked to provide input into the planning and implementation of Title I family engagement supports within Fairfax County.  TPAC representative support schools’ efforts in meeting federal family engagement expectations and gain access to professional development opportunities focused on best practices for family engagement.

Please email Katy Richman if you are interested in serving as a representative. More information about our Title I program will be shared at next week's PTA meeting.

Challenged Materials Review Committee

As detailed in Regulation 3009, schools are required to submit a list of individuals who are available to serve on a Challenged Materials Review Committee if a departmental committee is needed.  Names of a teacher, librarian, and two parents are required. Parents must not be employed by FCPS and contact information should be provided.

The list of potential committee members will be maintained at central office.  Names are randomly chosen to serve if a central departmental committee is required to review a challenged material.

Please email Katy Richman if you are interested in serving on this committee.

COVID Community Notifications

As a reminder, FCPS will no longer send a daily or weekly COVID case update. Parents/Guardians will only receive an email from their child’s school when several cases of COVID-19 occur in a single classroom, sports team, or extracurricular activity within a 14-day period. Individual case reports will be available on the FCPS COVID-19 Dashboard on our website.

To stay up to date, please continue to review our Health and Safety Guidance on the FCPS website.

COVID Diagnostic Testing

COVID-19 diagnostic testing is available at no cost for all currently enrolled FCPS students on select dates throughout the year when transmission may be highest. Diagnostic testing is provided at designated times and locations for those who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19.

Testing will be available September 6-8 and 12-14. Visit the testing website for information on locations and how to register for an appointment.

Our new FCPS superintendent is hosting a Community Conversation at Falls Church High School on September 13, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Learn more about Dr. Michelle Reid and help her get to know our school community. Language interpretation will be provided, as available, as well as child care and light refreshments. Please register to attend.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVUE, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Click here for a pdf copy that you can save and print or save and email to dnunez@fcps.edu

Please contact our main office if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.
