Principal's Message

DRES Families,

I look forward to seeing all of our families at our Back to School Open House next Thursday.  The Open House portion of the evening will run from 5:30-6:30 and you will have chance to meet your child's teacher, visit their classroom and connect with other members of our staff (specials teachers, counselors, resource teachers and family liaison). Stay and enjoy some time outside at our PTA picnic.

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and Labor Day holiday.

If you have any questions or concerns you can contact our main office at 703-279-8400 or contact me directly at cmsmith@fcps.edu.

Chris Smith

DRES Principal

Labor Day Holiday: FCPS Closed Friday and Monday

Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5, are part of the Labor Day holiday for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. View the 2022-23 school year calendar.

Birthday Treats!

Daniels Run is a treat free school. Please refrain from sending in treats such as cupcakes, cookies, etc... In lieu of treats please consider donating books or games to the classroom or possibly sending in a pencil or another item to share with students. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher for other suggestions they may have.

Thank you in advance!

Student Rights and Responsibilities

We are extremely happy to have your child in our school with us this year!

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Please contact us if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.

5 Tips for an Organized Backpack

  1. Sort and group supplies into categories.  Next, assign each category to a compartment or zipper pocket.
  2. Map out the backpack.  Have your child draw where each item should go.  Keep a copy of the map in the front pocket of the backpack and another copy in the main living area so that you can help them check to make sure all supplies are where they need to be.
  3. Use a clear luggage tag to keep track of what needs to go to school and what needs to come home.  Use a red marker to make a checklist on a piece of paper that will fit in the tag. It should list what your child needs to bring to school in the backpack. Use a blue marker to make a checklist of what needs to come home from school. Place the papers back to back and put them in the luggage tag. Attach it to the zipper tab of the backpack and show your child how to use the checklists as a guide
  4. Make a school to home folder.  Place papers handed out by the teacher in the folder.  Remind your child that the folder comes home every day. Check the folder each afternoon/evening. Sign anything requiring a signature, and take out anything that does not need to be returned to school.
  5. Schedule a regular time to do a backpack check in.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12).  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at Daniels Run by contacting, Sara Van Aalst, Assistant Principal, smvanaalst@fcps.edu, or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu

The purpose of this regulation is to provide guidelines and procedures for evaluating whether an animal may be
permitted on school property under one of these exceptions, including adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended.
