Floris Families,

It is hard to believe, but October begins tomorrow. Everyone is working hard to make this a fabulous school year for Every Eagle Every Day.

Work continues to progress on the new playground. We are excited to see the finished project and create new memories on this new playground.

October is a month of awareness. LGBTQIA+ History Month is recognized in October nationwide. We acknowledge and celebrate that LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families are an integral component of our nation. October is also Disability History and Awareness Month in Virginia. We honor those with disabilities and promote equal opportunities for all.

Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism begins at sundown on Tuesday, October 4. Tuesday is noted as a half-day religious/cultural observance date on the FCPS calendar, Wednesday, October 5, is a holiday for teachers and students. Wishing all who observe the holiday a meaningful Yom Kippur.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Rob Gibbs, Assistant Principal, ragibbs@fcps.edu

Library Volunteers

Help is still needed in the library!

Miss Dowling is looking for weekly help each morning in our Floris Elementary School Library from 9:15 AM – 10:30 AM.  Jobs include checking in books, sorting books, and putting the books back on the shelves. Volunteers should be able to alphabetize to the third letter and be familiar with the decimal system. Volunteering in the library will start the week September 26 and run through the second week of June 2023.  If there is no school for students on a day you are signed up for, the library will be closed. Thank you so much for considering!

lunch

We want to thank our families for your patience as we have taken these first weeks of school to focus on routines and expectations. We are ready to begin having parents join their child for lunch starting Monday, October 17th

When you come to join your children for lunch:

  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, you must sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Please ensure you are wearing the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your children.
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your sticker.
  • Lunch visitors should not go to the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue for our students.
  • We ask that you not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children, due to safety protocols and allergies.

We are not doing a sign-in for lunch visitors at this time. If we find that the number of visitors is too large and impacting lunch times and cafeteria capacity, we will pause visitors to set up a sign-in system. As we monitor the volume of families and capacity in our cafeteria, we ask families to limit coming in to one day per week for lunch.

We look forward to seeing lunch visitors starting October 17!
