Floris Families,

It is hard to believe that we are finishing the fifth week of school, and October starts next Saturday. There are not enough words to share our gratitude for how hard the Floris staff are working to provide meaningful learning opportunities for our students each day. The smiles on the faces of our students say it best!

Lot of things happening around Floris this week. Our students and staff completed the September Fire Drill and first semester Bus Evacuation Drill this week, and our playground work is in full swing.

So exciting to see our families at the first PTA meeting of the year on Wednesday evening. It looked like everyone enjoyed the ice cream as well.

Reminder to all of our 3rd-6th grade families, the Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) begin next week. The dates were listed in the letter you received earlier in September, and they are listed in the "Mark Your Calendar" section at the bottom of this newsletter.

Please remember that Monday (9/26) is a student holiday/professional workday for teachers. Monday is also Rosh Hashanah, the second day of the two-day celebration of the Jewish New Year. For those celebrating Rosh Hashana, Shanah Tovah!

Have an amazing weekend! We will see our students on Tuesday.

Special Message from Mrs. Clifford

On September 19, 2004 our family built the “Kylie Xiu Clifford Memorial Playground” at Floris Elementary School in loving memory of our first daughter Kylie Xiu Clifford who passed away from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) at 3 months and 19 days. This beautiful gift to Floris Elementary was made possible through the love, support and donations of friends, family and the Floris community.  For the last 18 years, countless children have played and made memories on the “Kylie Xiu Clifford Memorial Playground”. With the new playground being built, our family was able to keep a few parts (the buddy bench, the Clifford yellow fence with Memorial Plaque, and the Red Clifford dog) of her playground so that children can continue to play and make memories here at Floris Elementary.
