welcome back

Mustang Families-

We had an AMAZING first week of school at South County Middle School! The first week always re-invigorates me and reminds me of why we choose education as a career; the kids! Our students brought tremendous energy and life to our halls. They did an awesome job supporting each other and learning our new structures for the school year including “Away for the Day”, color coded bathrooms and daily recess. The adaptability of our students never ceases to amaze me! We look forward to talking about the new initiatives of our school with parents at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 8. Mark your calendars. More information will be provided closer to the event.

As students begin to get more engaged in school, please remind them to talk to you, their counselor, or one of the administrators if there is something going on that is concerning them. School staff can only address issues and concerns if we know about them! We need to keep the lines of communication open with our students and work to make the learning environment safe and accessible for ALL Mustangs.

Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Parent/Guardian Signature

Parents/guardians are required to sign the SR&R annually.  They can download and digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement in ParentVUE.  Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will be prompted to digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement upon login until the acknowledgement has been signed.  The name in the digital signature box must match the parent’s or guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted. Schools will be provided with a resource sheet to assist parents/guardians in using ParentVUE to sign the SR&R acknowledgement.

While use of ParentVUE to digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement is preferred, parents/guardians may elect to download and print the SR&R Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet   from the FCPS public website.  If a parent/guardian needs assistance accessing the signature sheet, they may contact their child’s school and ask that the school provide the form.  The SR&R Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet is due September 30, 2022

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Middle School (7-8).  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Middle School (7-8). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your Mustang’s PE teacher or the FLE Administrator, Miranda Hendershot, mehendershot@fcps.edu or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu.
