Glasgow Parent Meeting: Counselor Dismissal Update

Mason District Community,

Recent events involving a counselor who worked at Glasgow Middle School understandably created great concern for our families regarding hiring practices in FCPS and brought to light questions about the communication protocols among police departments around the state with each other and with school divisions.

Our community is worried and has many outstanding questions about what occurred and how FCPS will work to prevent future incidents. As a Glasgow MS parent, I share the same anxieties.

To help address your questions and listen to your concerns, a meeting has been scheduled with Dr. Reid and me at Glasgow Middle School today, Thursday, August 25th, from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. Email messages and text messages were sent to parents yesterday to inform them of this meeting. We are cognizant of the short notice of the meeting, but it is crucial that newly discovered information be provided to the community.

At this meeting, it is expected that Dr. Reid will provide updates regarding the process of notification to FCPS regarding Mr. Thornton’s arrest and subsequent conviction by the Chesterfield Police Department. Dr. Reid will also share current next steps since learning more about the communications failures. She will also listen to your questions and concerns to help our community more forward with increased confidence in the safety protocols in place to protect our children.

We hope you will be able to attend this very important conversation. If you are not able to be present, or would prefer to share your concerns privately, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Reid at superintendent@fcps.edu. She has committed to responding in a timely manner and to updating our community about the ongoing investigation and any additional next steps as soon as she is able. You may also reach me at 571-423-1083 or rjanderson@fcps.edu to express your concerns.
