Dear Spring HIll Families,
The 2022-23 school year is off to a great start! The joy of having all of our students back in the building was evident on the faces of our staff and students! Spring Hill staff members enthusiastically welcomed our students into the building. Seeing teachers lead activities throughout the day to help students start to build relationships and feel connected as well as get them excited about learning was energizing. Click here to see our open house and first day pictures featured on our website.
Building relationships is one of our priorities. Spring Hill follows the Responsive Classroom approach. Responsive Classroom is a student-centered, social, and emotional learning approach to teaching. It is designed to create safe, joyful, and engaging classrooms and school communities for both students and teachers.
Morning Meetings are an engaging way to start each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success socially and academically. Each morning, students and teachers will gather together for twenty to thirty minutes and interact with one another during four purposeful components: Greeting, Sharing, Group Activity, and the Morning Message.
Similar to when we build relationships with students, we want to establish strong routines. During the first weeks of school, our teachers and students will walk through the different routines of learning for students. It will include helping students how to use school supplies, navigating different transitions, and developing skills to work independently. This work will help our students to become more independent at home and school.
We look forward to growing our partnership with you this year so that we can all be our best for your children. If you have any questions, concerns, compliments, or observations, please let me know. You can also contact your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator.
We hope all our students have a great school year!
Dr. Michelle Reid will continue to host Superintendent Community Conversations across the division through November to get to know our communities. Events are being scheduled at high schools in each pyramid at 6:30-7:30 p.m. Schools will share registration information with families and employees in advance of each event. See the list of events that have been scheduled.
The save the date for the Langley Pyramid is 10/26/22.
If you would like to volunteer during lunch, please use this link to sign up. Kindergarten teachers have a separate form they share in their weekly newsletter.
The end of the day is a very busy time for our office staff. We are preparing for dismissal and end of day routines. If you need to pick your student prior to the end of the day, we ask that you arrive to the office no later than 3:15 PM.
This year’s annual Back to School Night will be held on August 30th. We will have two sessions: 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Back to School Night is an opportunity to learn about our school and the grade level curriculum. You will also hear about the classroom practices and expectations your child's teacher will use to support your child and maintain an open line of communication with you.
Our specialists will be in the cafeteria, and you may visit them any time between 6:00 and 8:00 PM.
Some of the digital resources your child may use this year require parental consent. The tools have been carefully reviewed to ensure that they align with the FCPS Learning Model and FCPS conducts the same technical evaluations for all products that use student information. You can find more information about FCPS’ commitment to student privacy and how resources are vetted at Digital Resources in FCPS.
This permission will expire at the end of this school year, and can be revoked at any time by contacting the school. If you have questions about any of the digital resources listed below, please contact your child’s school.
To provide your parental consent for each student in your family, please follow this link and follow the provided directions.
Registration for general music, band, and orchestra is open until Monday, August 29th. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument. No prior musical background is necessary. Band and orchestra classes are free and take place once a week during the school day as part of your student’s normal specials schedule. Our Spring Hill band and orchestra programs are among the largest and most outstanding in the county.
Click on the HERE for more information and to register.
All parents of 4th-6th grade students should fill out this form regardless of whether their student will play an instrument in school this year or not.
After receiving new carpet over the summer, the Library needed to be unpacked and reorganized. We are happy to announce that it will be open for student checkout as of Monday, August 29! Hopefully the students are as excited about the new carpet and layout as we are! Students in grades K-2 will visit the Library weekly as part of their Specials schedule. Students in grades 3-6 will come to the Library for checkout with their homeroom but are also welcome to visit at other times. All students are encouraged to borrow books of their choice throughout the school year. Library books are checked out for 3 weeks but may be renewed for additional time if needed. There are no fines for overdue books, but remember there are likely other students waiting to read them so please return when you are finished. Mrs. DeVylder is always happy to recommend and help you find new books! The Library is looking for parent volunteers that would be interested in helping to organize and shelve books. This could be as much or as little as you’d like. Please contact Mrs. DeVylder (lfdevylder@fcps.edu) if you are interested or would like more information.
Summer Reading – Have you seen Mrs. DeVylder’s Summer Reading Shelfie in the front windows? Take a look at what books she read over the summer and pick up a blank copy for you to fill out and hand in for a prize! Summer Reading Shelfies will be collected until Wednesday, September 7.
The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12.
All students in grades K-12 will participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. For students in grades K-2, teachers will complete a survey on their observations of students' skills and experiences. Students in grades 3-12 will reflect and report on their own skills and experiences. S
Parents have the right to opt their children out of taking this screener. For more information regarding this screener and access to the Opt-out form, click here: SEL Parent Notification Letter.
