General Information

Back to School Information

All of our back to school information is available on our website!   It was great to see so many new and familiar faces at our Open House Events.  We hope to see you again at our Cougar Kickoff on September 1.  Please make sure you have submitted all required forms (see back to school site) so we have the most up-to-date information for your child(ren).

Community Conversation with Dr. Reid - Save the Date

Please save the date for a very special event!  Dr. Michelle Reid, FCPS superintendent, will host a Community Conversation at Oakton High School on Tuesday, October 11 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. This event will be a unique opportunity to help Dr. Reid get to know the Oakton Pyramid school community and learn more about her vision for our district.

Language interpretation will be provided, as available, as well as child care and light refreshments. Please register here to attend.

Attendance Protocols & Policies

Please take a moment to review our attendance protocols and policies.

Health and Safety Guidance Document

The FCPS Health and Safety guidance document has been updated for this school year. Please see this site for more information.

Calendar Adjustment

The https://www.fcps.edu/calendars/standard-school-year-calendar has been slightly updated for this school year.  April 13, the last day of Passover, should have been marked as a Religious and Cultural Observance day from the beginning of the year.  This remains a school day for students, however we will follow protocols for religious and cultural observance days.

Parent Information Line

Parents who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese can call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS and to receive support if they are having difficulty communicating with their children's schools due to a language barrier.

Safety Drills

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills.

Working together, we create a safe, secure environment for students to learn and grow in our schools.

Laptop Distribution

Students should have received their laptop during their advisory class today.  If a student has an issue with their laptop, our technology specialists will be available  during all lunches to assist.  If a student was absent, they should first check with their advisory teacher and then go to the Technology Office, room 2410.

Cougar Kickoff

Join us Thursday, September 1 from 4:00-6:30pm for our annual Cougar Kickoff located on the softball field!  Over 70 booths will be available to highlight the wide variety of clubs and activities at Oakton.  You can also buy spirit items, food, and see a student band perform live.  Stay for our home football opener against the Woodson Cavaliers at 7:00pm.

As a reminder, no backpacks or outside food/drink will be allowed into the stadium.  Tickets are $5.00 each.

Back to School Curriculum Website - September  8, 2022

On Thursday, September 8 we will launch our Back to School Curriculum website.  This will include a formal video presentation from each teacher that will outline for their course:

  • An overview of the curriculum
  • A review of any pertinent classroom procedures/routines
  • An explanation of grading and assessment
  • An explanation of how students can access work from an absence

This allows families to review presentations at the date/time that is suitable for them and ensures that everyone is able to access information for all of their child's courses with no conflicts.

Volunteer Opportunities

Cougar Canteen

WHAT IS THE COUGAR CANTEEN?

The Cougar Canteen is returning this fall to Oakton! The Canteen is an after-school concession stand giving ALL OHS students an opportunity to grab a snack before after school activities. The Canteen was an Oakton staple years ago and is back by popular demand! The Canteen is in Cougar Hall. It will be open daily at dismissal for approximately one hour. The Canteen will offer a variety of grab and go snacks and drinks. On alternating days, the Canteen will offer pizza or subway sandwiches. All items are cash only.  The Canteen is a huge benefit to students not heading home directly after school.

WHAT WE NEED!

The Canteen is operated by non-staff, adult volunteers. Your time commitment is about one hour. If you have volunteered at any OHS concession stand you already know what to do. If not, it is very easy to learn, and directions will be provided. A sign-up genius is available now for volunteers. The SUG is only for September and October currently. The Canteen must have 2 to 3 adults per shift to run efficiently. If we have less than 2 persons, we will not open that day. This is a great opportunity to improve our student life. Please sign-up ASAP so we know how soon we can open the Canteen! The goal is to open on Tuesday, September 6th!

Challenged Materials Review Committee

Every year principals are asked to provide names of staff members, parents, and students who are willing and available to served on a Challenged Materials Review Committee if a departmental committee is needed.  Parent names would be randomly chosen by the division to serve if a central departmental committee is required to review a challenged material.  Parents may not be FCPS employees.  We are looking for two interested parents.  If you are interested, please fill out this form by Friday, September 2, 2022.  A student form will also be posted in schoology sites for any interested students who would wish to serve.  In the event a student is asked to serve, the school would be the person contacting the student.  Please see FCPS Regulation 3009 for a more detailed description.

PTSA News and Information

Oakton Pantry

Thank you to everyone who has already so generously helped the Pantry re-stock our shelves for this school year!  We were able to open our doors the first week of school and demand was high.  This week our greatest need is full size toiletry items (shampoo, body wash, deodorant) and snack pack items (microwaveable mac 'n cheese and ravioli, fruit snacks, granola bars, and small containers of shelf-stable milk and juice).  Donations can be dropped off in the front office during school hours.

We'd also like to take this time to give a huge belated shout-out to the Oakton Boys Lacrosse Team!  At their end of year banquet this past school year, team members and parents donated an incredible amount of toiletries.  They enabled us to send students off on summer break with a full set of supplies.  Thank you Boys Lacrosse for your generosity!

Cougar Kick-off:

Students interested in volunteering with the Pantry are encouraged to join the Pantry Club. Come find us at Cougar Kick-off to get membership information and to sign up.  Questions can be sent to oaktonpantryclub@gmail.com.

Donation Drive at the 9/1 Game:

At this week's first home game on September 1, the Pantry will have a table set up where we will be accepting donations.  In addition to accepting non-perishable food, household supplies, and toiletries, we will also be accepting monetary donations.  Checks should be made payable to OHS PTSA with PANTRY DONATION written on the memo line.

Giant Food Bloomin' 4 Good Program

For the month of August the Oakton Pantry is the beneficiary of the Giant Food Bloomin' 4 Good Program.  For each specially marked $12.99 bouquet of flowers sold, the Oakton Pantry will be donated $1.00.  This is for the entire month of August at the Giant Food located at 9400 Fairfax Boulevard, Fairfax, VA.
