Bonnie Brae ES- Family Newsletter

Principal

Hello Scottie families!  Happy Friday!  We have had such an amazing start to the 2022-2023 school year, and seeing our students return has brought us so much joy.  We have had the opportunity to visit classrooms and spend time with students at the bus loop, at kiss and ride, at lunch and at recess.

Thank you for your patience, especially with transportation, while we have steadily worked out many of the kinks from the first week.  Our kiss and ride process is going quicker each day, and we appreciate that everyone continues to watch for our students during arrival and dismissal, as safety is our top priority.

Next Thursday, September 1, is our first Bonnie Brae spirit day -- Blue & White Day!  Students and staff (families, too) are encouraged to wear Bonnie Brae spirit wear or our school colors of blue and white.  Spirit days will continue throughout the year, typically on the last Friday of each month, and we will communicate these with our community as dates are finalized.

As a reminder, there is no school in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5.

Have a great weekend!

Attendance Matters!

Regular attendance is important not only for academic growth, but also for physical wellbeing and social-emotional health. If you have concerns regarding attendance for your child, please do not hesitate to reach out to the front office. They will connect you with a member of the BBES Attendance Team to help address your needs.

 DID YOU KNOW?

  • Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.

Digital Resource Consent

At Bonnie Brae Elementary, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used.

This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.

We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to the school if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Screen Activity Report for Parents

FCPS has tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our websiteLearn more about our Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Parent/Guardian Signature

We are extremely happy to have your child in our school with us this year!

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

sis srr

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Please contact us if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.
