Message from Dr. Floyd

Dear Woodson Community,

What an exciting first week of school! Having students back in the building is both energizing and heartwarming. I have watched students interact and smile as they get to know their teachers and peers – and in class without cell phones. Based on what I have observed thus far, I anticipate a positive and productive school year!

On a personal note, I wanted to let our community know that beginning Wednesday, August 31st, I will be out on medical leave through the month of September. In my absence, we welcome Kevin Greata as our interim principal. Mr. Greata is currently an assistant principal at Fairfax HS.  He has over six years of experience as an assistant principal including middle school and high school as well as several summer programs. Previously, he taught special and general education math  (from Algebra 1 to BC Calculus) and served as a pyramid math specialist.

In the summer of 2021, Mr. Greata served as the summer Credit Recovery principal which took place at Woodson HS.  During that experience he not only got to know our facility but also many of our students, staff and families. I am confident Mr. Greata’s experience, knowledge and calming demeanor will serve our school community well over the next month.  Mr. Greata can be reached at kjgreata@fcps.edu Please know you can also reach out to your teachers, counselor or assistant principal with any of your needs.

I look forward to rejoining the Woodson team in October.

Dr. Floyd
Principal

Parent/Legal Guardians are required to update this information through weCare@school via their SIS ParentVue account. To access weCare@school, log into ParentVUE, select FCPS Links from the left menu, click on weCare@school - Update Emergency Care Info. After reviewing each section of the form, please click the Submit the Form button to send the updated information to the school's system. Click here for more details.
  2. Digital Resources - Parental Consent Form
Woodson HS uses a variety of digital tools for learning. Please look through the list and digitally log in to sign the form. You will need your students' ID number to access this form. See #8 for more details.
  3. Student Rights and Responsibilities

Senior tradition - painting their parking spaces.

5. Updated Schedule Change Request Process

We are currently not permitting any schedule change requests for the first two weeks of school unless it is to correct an error or missing class in a student’s schedule. This is to allow students and teachers time to settle into their routines, get to know each other/begin forming relationships, and allow students time to become familiar with the content and expectations of their classes.

However, we recognize that some students wish to request to move up in rigor in a core course (English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and World Languages). If a student wishes to request a change to their schedule to move up in rigor (i.e. standard to honors or honors to AP), they must see their counselor and submit that request by Thursday, September 1st. This is the last day a student can move into a more rigorous course due to the fast paced nature of those courses and the amount of content they would have missed by then.

After September 1st, the schedule change request window is from September 26th – October 7th. Students may not request a change to their schedule before September 26th. This is to ensure that students show a sincere effort to make their current class(es) work by spending time with their teachers, and seeing them for help during 3rd Period Returns and after school. Students should see their counselor in Student Services if they have any questions or need any assistance with this.

6. School Clothing

Parents, we need your help reinforcing proper school attire.  One way we help families distinguish between what should be worn at school is to think of what you might wear to work. Clothing that fits, is neat and clean, and conforms to standards of safety, good taste, and decency is how FCPS describes school appropriate clothing. This is different from what is worn on vacation, or when out with friends. This applies to every person, regardless of their gender. Things to consider when choosing what to wear to school:

  • When I walk up the stairs or down the hallway, can anyone see any part of a private area?  In some cases, some shorts are just too short for school.
  • Is my underwear showing? This includes when pants are or are not pulled up, or bra straps/parts showing, and bralettes under an unbuttoned shirt.  Last year, many parents were surprised when we called them to say their child had on an unbuttoned shirt exposing their underwear or bare chest – it does happen.
  • Does the clothing allow excessive skin to show?  A good way to tell if this is the case is to notice if the pants/shorts and the shirt meet and touch when arms are down.  If so, then that is appropriate for school.
  • Keep in mind FCPS SR&R has a no hat / head covering policy that we must follow.  Certainly head coverings for religious or cultural reasons are acceptable.

We want everyone to have a successful school year - learning, spending time with friends, and participating in all the activities that bring them joy whether it is a club, sport, or the fine/performing arts. These rules are in place to make that possible without disruption.

7. Attendance

Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office. Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.

Attendance Document

8. Families, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Woodson High School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your teachers and counselors if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

9. Student Parking Passes

Parking passes for the 2022-23 school year are available for purchase online only. The cost for a full-year parking pass is $200.00.

There are 2 steps to purchase a student parking pass:

  • Parking Permit Application
  • Payment on MySchoolBucks (navigate to the School Store, select the option for a parking permit, and check out.  Please print your receipt and bring with you when picking up your permit.)

Enforcement will begin on Monday, September 12th. Student Parking Pass Website.

10. Forgotten Items & Lost and Found

Q - My son/daughter forgot their lunch/homework assignment/laptop.  Where can I drop off items?

A– Forgotten items may be dropped off at the main office on a designated bookshelf.  Please make sure your child's name is written on the item.

Q - My son/daughter lost their wallet (or any item).  Where should I go to see if it has been turned in?

A – You may come to the main office and a Safety and Security assistant will escort you to the Lost and Found room to search for your item.

11. Food Deliveries

Please reinforce with your child that ordering from a delivery service during school is not allowed.

If your student forgets their lunch, parents or guardians can bring lunch and drop it off in the main office.

Students will often have a delivery driver come to an entrance other than Door 1, which compromises the safety of the entire school. Our office staff does not have the time to accept food deliveries and will not open the doors for Uber Eats, GrubHub or any other service.

12. Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are:

  • Odd Days during Learning Seminar
  • Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
  • Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.

Thank you, W.T Woodson HS Tech Support Team
