Administrator Avenue
Dear Bee Families,
We have had an amazing week welcoming staff and students back to the building. Thank you for attending our Welcome Back Bus Tour and Back to School Bash. There was so much joy and love in the building having our students return back to us yesterday!
We wanted to take the time out to thank our PTA for the pizza, water, popsicles, and deejay. We had a blast and the weather was perfect. More special thanks you to Trinity Presbyterian Church for helping beautify our grounds along with our technology teacher Mr. Mosley.
We have been working hard on hiring. We were able to hire our final Spanish Immersion teacher and a classroom monitor. We are still in need of two classroom monitors and two Special Education teachers. If you know of any possible candidates please encourage them to send their resumes to one of us.
The FCPS Facilities office has started grounds work on our Pre-K and Special needs playground by paving the area. We will continue to keep you updated with our progress.
Only 3 more sleeps until the 1st day of school and we can’t wait! You will be allowed to walk your student to class on the first 2 days of school. Please give them a quick hug and goodbye. Our teachers are ready to set their routines and procedures for the coming year. Please also make sure you have communicated with your child’s teacher how your student will be going home.
Do you think our staff is as great as we do? Give them some appreciation by submitting an FCPS Cares.
As always, we are a team! Please reach out with any questions or compliments you would like to share.
Warmly,
Candace J. Hunstad Elizabeth Baxter Greg Brotemarkle

Kiss & Ride, Bus Loop, and End of the Day Student Pickup Important Information
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Herndon ES takes the safety and security of all of our students, staff, families, bus drivers, and other Kiss and Ride drivers very seriously. There is a specific system in place for Kiss & Ride that we all need to follow.
- Always wait until a staff member is present and you are at the designated area to let your child out of the car.
- Do not attempt to pass another car or bus, enter the bus loop, or let your child out of the car at a different location during this time.
- The speed bumps were installed to slow us down. We want everyone to enter and exit safely.
-
If you choose to use Kiss & Ride, plan ahead. It takes time and it cannot be rushed. So, please enter with patience, follow the system, and everyone will be safe and less frustrated.
- Need to check your child out at the end of the day? If you know in advance, please send in a note so that the teacher is aware. Please come to the office no later than 3:30pm. It is very busy in the classrooms as the teachers and students are closing out the end of the day.
Thank you!

Afternoon bus route information will be available from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Safety Drill Message for Parents & Guardians
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The first month of school is full of learning and establishing community and routines. In addition, we are required to instruct students on emergency preparedness drills throughout the school year.
Every school in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly.
These drills are short and precise so that our students and staff are familiar with the procedures in the event of an emergency. Below you will find a list of the safety routines that we practice throughout the year.
Type of Drill: Required Frequency
Fire Safety Drills:
Once a week during the first 20 days of school Once a month from October-June
Lockdown Drill:
One lockdown drill in the first 20 days of school One additional lockdown drill after the first 60 days of school
Tornado Drill
Once a year in March (second semester)
Bus Emergency Drill
One during the first 30 instructional days of the first semester and the other during the first 30 instructional days of the second semester.
