Back to School Fair Highlights
Welcome Letter from Our Principal
Dear Garfield Eagles,
Welcome Back! We are so excited about your return on Monday, August 22nd. It was great to see so many faces at our “Back to School Fair”! We are looking forward to a fantastic year with you! This school year, we will support our Fairfax County Public Schools Strategic Plan with three main goals.
- Work together as a team to enhance the culture and climate of our school by communicating with clarity and seeking input from all stakeholders.
- Remain student centered by strengthening Tier one instruction in CLT’s and school-wide professional development.
- Embrace data to respond effectively through targeted instruction while monitoring student growth and nurturing their full potential.
By adopting these goals, we hope to increase strong relationships with students and families, support students by name and by need while acknowledging and honoring student voice. These goals are embedded in our School Improvement Innovation Plan and will be monitored closely throughout the school year!
Have a great weekend!
Principal April Cage

FCPS Updated Cell Phone Policy
Updates to SR&R includes new guidance on student use of cell phones. The new section on cell phones prohibits cell phone use in classrooms. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class.
Students in grades K-6: Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. Teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities when appropriate. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
Parents should talk to their child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations for this upcoming school year. Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users. More information about the SR&R is available online.
Consent Needed for Select Digital Resources!
Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your permission before they can be used. These resources have been investigated by FCPS and meet federal guidelines. Our teachers would love to get started as soon as possible. Please find our school’s list of the resources and a link to provide digital consent on our website. You will need to know your child’s Student ID and your enrolling email address.
School Forms and Registration

It’s important for parents to complete all required school forms. Returning families in grades PreK-6 must complete the following forms yearly:
- Health Information
- Emergency Care Information
- Identification of Military Connected Students
Families can get a jumpstart on the continuing enrollment forms by clicking here. If you prefer to wait, the forms will be sent home with your child in the first day of school packet for families to complete and return to school.
If your child is starting kindergarten or if you are new to Garfield Elementary, please know that all school registration forms must be completed in order to receive class placement. Electronic forms for new students can be found here. Parents who have questions about registering in Fairfax County Public Schools can visit the FCPS website for additional information.
If you have any questions regarding registration, please contact our registrar, Sarah Rothman, at sgrothman1@fcps.edu or call 703-923-2900 for an appointment.
