MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear WMES families,
Thank you for a wonderful first week of school. There were many smiling faces and I’m happy to report that they’ve continued into this week. Many thanks to our PTA and other volunteers that supported our teacher in-service week, K play date, and Open House. We sincerely appreciate the support you provide to our students and staff. As we start to transition beyond our opening of school, please keep Thursday, September 8 marked on your calendar. We will be having a virtual Back To School Night from 6:45-8:00 PM. Teachers will be holding two half our sessions and will email parents directly with a welcome and the link needed to join. As our construction progresses and our building gets completed, we are planning to hold our Fall Festival Trunk or Treat and a second Open House on October 20. This will be an evening when families may come for a fun evening of community and see the classrooms and other parts of the building that have been newly renovated. Again, thank you for all the support and we look forward to seeing you soon at these upcoming events.
Sincerely,
Brad Bennink
Principal
Washington Mill Elementary School
Sinceramente,
Brad Bennink

Student Rights & Responsibilities Booklet
-
Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed. Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022. Please contact our main office at 703-619-2500 if you have difficulty accessing the booklet.
New Cell Phone Policy in SR&R
- An important update made to the Student Rights & Responsibilities document (SR&R) for the coming school year is the regulation to prohibit cell phone use in classrooms. Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones during class unless permitted by the teacher for instructional purposes. We acknowledge this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class. Please talk to your child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations for this upcoming school year. Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users.
