welcome back

Welcome Back Island Creek!

We at Island Creek Elementary and our Region 3 Principal, Karen Corbett Sanders, are excited to welcome back our students for the 22-23 school year! Please view Mrs. Sanders' back to school message here

School Security and Safety

Island Creek takes the security of our students and staff very seriously. Every visitor/adult who enters the building is monitored. As per the recommendation from FCPS’ Office of Safety and Security, after ringing the doorbell, office staff will kindly ask visitors, “Welcome to Island Creek, how may I help you?” and obtain the purpose of the guest’s visit. All visitors walking into Island Creek ES must ring the doorbell, state their name and purpose of the visit, show a valid driver’s license at the doorbell camera, and come to the office with a valid driver’s license to sign in using the Visitor Management System (VMS). The VMS will issue each visitor a sticker that should always be worn when in the building.

Please note that this applies to all visitors, including those who are known to office staff.

Transportation, Arrival, and Dismissal

Bus Routes

Bus were routes posted to SIS ParentVUE accounts on August 12th.

Walkers

Walkers will use Door 1 (the main entrance).  We welcome all students into the school at 8:20 am, and students need to be in class by 8:35 am, each day.

We ask that parents/guardians say goodbye to their walkers at Door 1 beginning the first day of school for students in Grades 1-6 and no later than Monday, August 29th for all students, including Kindergarten. We always have staff members to ensure students get to their classrooms safely.

Kiss and Ride

Kiss and Ride opens the doors at 8:20 am, daily for arrival. Please follow the line and pull up to Door 2. If the door is closed, please park and bring your child to the Main Office to check in.

Pick up for Kiss and Ride will begin at 3:20 pm, and please place your tag on your vehicle's rear view mirror.

Remember to stay in your car for Kiss and Ride. A staff member or patrol will open your car for your child to exit or enter your car.

COVID-19 Protocols

While we had hoped that the pandemic would be behind us, it seems that COVID will be something we must manage as a community for the foreseeable future. FCPS will continue to follow the guidance of national, state, and local health experts when determining the layered prevention strategies that are needed to keep our schools safe and open for learning. FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff

  • Students demonstrating any of the following symptoms will be sent home from school: Fever (100.4 or greater), Chills, Cough, Shortness of breath, Loss of taste/smell, Sore throat, Fatigue, Muscle aches, Runny Nose/Congestion, Stomachache, Diarrhea, Nausea/Vomiting, Headaches. The parent/guardian will be notified and the FCPS Guidance for Student Sent Home from the Care Room with COVID-like Illness form will be sent home.
  • Parents are expected to pick up their child within one hour of notification.
  • For students with chronic symptoms similar to COVID-like symptoms/illness, parents/guardians are encouraged to complete and regularly update the Health Information Form (HIF).

Clinic Room Care

Your school health room services include:

  1. Care of sick (except COVID-like symptoms/illness) and injured students according to the FCPS School Health Emergency COVID Temporary Care Guidelines.
  2. Administration of medication provided by parents/guardians with proper authorization completed by their health care provider.
  3. Coordination of care for students with chronic health conditions during the school day.
  4. Hearing and vision screening (grades K, 3, 7, 10, new to Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), and those students referred by teachers and parents/guardians).

How can you help your school health room provide the best possible care?

  • Keep your student home when they are sick.
  • Advise the School Health Aide or the Public Health Nurse of any special health concerns.
  • Immediately notify the physical education (PE) teacher if your child has any PE restrictions.
  • Provide current home, work, and alternate telephone numbers for the Emergency Care Information form.

Lunch in our Cafeteria

We are excited about the possibility of opening our cafeteria back up for parents to eat lunch with their child(ren) in the future. As we start this new school year, we are currently not able to accommodate parents visiting during lunch. All students will be eating in the cafeteria and we do have large class sizes at some grade levels. To ensure we have time to teach and reinforce cafeteria routines, and to assess our seat availability, we will be delaying the visitation of parents during lunches. Stay tuned for updates!

Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy

Students in K-8 must keep phones, smart watches and other similar devices silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones and other electronic devices may only be used on campus before and after school.

No Dogs on School Grounds

With the exception of service animals, dogs are not allowed on school district grounds, playgrounds or sports fields at any time throughout the calendar year. Please leave your pets at home when coming to school.

Go Paperless

You can opt to “Go Paperless” in ParentVUE and receive only online report cards. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the report cards for secondary students and progress reports for ES students. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all your associated students, no matter what school level!

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians* will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless."

Dining Room Assistant Wanted

Looking for a way to support our school for a few hours each day? We are in need of a dining room assistant to help out during lunch. Our dining attendant (a paid position) supports students during lunch, with working hours from 10:30 AM-1:45 PM. Please contact our Assistant Principal, Karen Baxter, at kpbaxter@fcps.edu, if you are interested!
