Back to School Information

Back to School Information

All of our back to school information was posted last Thursday and emailed out to all families.  Please see our website for all the information you need to feel prepared for the start of the year!   We hope to see you at our upcoming back to school events!

Back to School Curriculum Website - September  8, 2022

On Thursday, September 8 we will launch our Back to School Curriculum website.  This will include a formal video presentation from each teacher that will outline for their course:

  • An overview of the curriculum
  • A review of any pertinent classroom procedures/routines
  • An explanation of grading and assessment
  • An explanation of how students can access work from an absence

This allows families to review presentations at the date/time that is suitable for them and ensures that everyone is able to access information for all of their child's courses with no conflicts.

FCPS Updated Cell Phone Policy

An important update made to the Student Rights & Responsibilities document (SR&R) for the coming school year is the regulation to prohibit cell phone use in classrooms. Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones during class unless permitted by the teacher for instructional purposes. We acknowledge this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning.  Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class.  Please talk to your child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations for this upcoming school year.  Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users.

Laptop Distribution

On the first day of school students will attend advisory as their first period class.  The period rotation for the day will be Periods 3, 1, 5, 7.  We will resume our normal burgundy day period rotation of (1, 3, 5, 7) on Wednesday August 24.  During this advisory period, all students will receive their FCPSOn laptop device.

Back to School Parent Coffee

To ensure that all families feel prepared for the start of school, we will offer a Parent Coffee via Zoom on Friday, August 19 at 8:00am.  This is a chance for anyone who is unable to attend the open houses opportunities a chance to ask questions and seek clarification.  A link for this parent coffee will be emailed out on Thursday, August 18.

Immunization Requirement – Rising 12th Graders

There was a new immunization requirement for rising 12th graders for this school year that we want to ensure all rising 12th grade families are aware.    Effective July 1, 2021, all students entering twelfth grade are required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.  Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.

Please provide one of the following documents to Oakton High School as soon as possible:

  • An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine at age 16 or older.
  • A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given at age 16 or older.
  • A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  • A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf

Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online or by calling 703-246-2411.

The needed documentation can be provided to the school in one of the following ways:

  1. Scanned and emailed to the school at OaktonHSOffice@fcps.edu
  2. Mailed to the school, Attn: Jill Hendelman
  3. Dropped off in the Main Office, Attn: Jill Hendelman

Please contact Jill Hendelman at 703-319-2810 if you have any questions.

Be Wise, Immunize! Required Vaccines for 2022-23 School Year

Vaccinations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood vaccinations over recent years because of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and ready for school. Check with your students’ health care providers now to make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.

Appointments are required for most vaccination clinics. Don’t wait until the last minute when you might not be able to find an appointment. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of clinics or schedule with your family’s health care provider.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.
