Terra Centre Updates 08/15/22

Hello Terra Centre Families,

It is hard to believe that in one week we will begin the 2022-2023 school year and we are so excited to welcome Terra Centre students back to school! Class placements will be emailed to families tomorrow afternoon, so be on the lookout!

Thank you to our new families who attended our New Family Orientation last week!  The presentation is available on our website for all families (TC New Family Orientation Presentation).  It includes basic information about our school and the 2022-2023 school year.

Below you will find important information and useful links for Return to School!  We will continue to provide information and updates as we get closer to the first day of school.  As always, thank you for your help and support.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Cafeteria Help Wanted!

Looking for a way to support our school for a few hours each day?  We are in need of a dining attendant to help out during lunch.  Our dining attendant (a paid position) supports students during lunch, with working hours from 10:45 AM-1:30 PM.  Please contact our Administrative Assistant, Julie Hart, at jkhart@fcps.edu, if you are interested!

Volunteers needed

Parent Volunteers

We currently have a need for parent volunteers in our cafeteria to support our students at lunch. If you can spare an hour or two, please contact our assistant principal, Teresa Lewis at tmlewis@fcps.edu. We would love to have your help!

Transportation/Pick Up Patrol Sign Up

As we welcome students back to Terra Centre ES, we want to ensure the safe arrival and departure of each child. All families should have received an email/text message/phone call from Transportation outlining their child's transportation to/from school (either walker/bus rider). We encourage all families to use the mode of transportation designated by the Transportation department.

Terra Centre ES has a courtesy area called Kiss & Ride (at our side entrance off Burke Centre Pkwy), which is designed as a safe place for adults in private vehicles to load and unload children. Adults must remain in the vehicle and students must enter and exit the vehicle on the right side, closest to the curb, as this ensures we will be able to provide an efficient and safe transfer of children.

  • Be on the lookout for an email from Pick-Up Patrol. Please follow directions to register for the app.  We will use this for daily dismissal and dismissal changes.
  • Students may enter the building at 8:30 a.m.
  • Kiss n’ Ride: You may drop off at Door 8, beginning at 8:25 AM.
  • Bus stops and route information are available on ParentVUE.

2022 Student Rights & Responsibilities Includes Cell Phone Usage Update

The Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read the Letter from the Superintendent on the 2022-23 Student Rights and Responsibilities: A Guide for Families. Key changes to the document for the 2022-23 school year include:

  • Adding rights to protect citizenship and immigration status from unauthorized sharing.
  • Changes to FCPS’ Acceptable Use Policy Regulation for Technology.
  • A new section on cell phones.

The new section on cell phones prohibits cell phone use in classrooms. We recognize that this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class.

  • Students in K-8 must keep phones silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day unless there is a medical need or emergency, or teachers have allowed the usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool. Cell phones may only be used on campus before and after school. (Except in secondary schools where students in grades 7 and 8 may use phones during passing periods.

If a parent or guardian believes their child requires access to a personally owned device(s) as an accommodation, they should contact child’s school team—i.e., 504 Committee, Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team, English Language Committee, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Team—to schedule a meeting to have their request considered.

Parents should talk to their child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations for this upcoming school year. Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users. More information about the SR&R is available online.

Trust Policy

You may have heard that the Fairfax County School Board approved a Trust Policy that solidifies our commitment to foster a caring culture and strives to provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for all students and families.

This policy aligns with Fairfax County’s Public Trust and Confidentiality Policy to ensure that FCPS students and families can access FCPS benefits and services without fear that information will be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to federal immigration officials.

The school division is already performing much of the work referenced in the Trust Policy. The policy, along with the upcoming regulation, will serve to solidify our efforts, so all FCPS staff, students, and families have a common understanding of the policy.

Every FCPS employee plays an important part in carrying out the Trust Policy and will demonstrate cultural responsiveness in supporting families, students, and other staff by protecting the privacy of personally identifiable information (PII) of students and families. Employees will follow a clear, standardized process for requesting, accessing, or disclosing prohibited personal information as outlined in FCPS Regulations 2202 and 4220.

Additional information is available in multiple languages on FCPS’ Trust Policy webpage. Please email FCPS’ Office of Professional Learning and Equity, OPLFE@fcps.edu, with questions about the policy.

Immunization Reminder

All students are required to be immunized against certain communicable diseases to attend school in the state of Virginia. It is important for all students to receive the required immunizations.

Please talk with your family health care provider about whether or not your children are up to date on their vaccines before the new school year begins. Submit updated immunization records to your school as soon as possible.

More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.
