Glasgow Community Gazette - August 9

Principal

Greetings Glasgow Community!

Less than two weeks to go until we welcome students back to school for the 2022-23 school year!  We are so excited to have staff back in the building next week and students on August 22nd.  On Thursday, August 11th, we will welcome our new teachers to Glasgow, and then the first day back on contract for all teachers is Friday, August 12th!

We are excited to continue our mission to “We are a community empowered by diversity, inspired by our success and committed to lifelong learning”.

This year’s theme will be “One Voice: Through Collective Ownership”.  As a school community, we will continue to challenge each student to grow in their abilities, while providing them with exciting opportunities to be prepared for the demands of postsecondary education, meaningful careers, and effective citizenship.

Please be sure to subscribe to our News You Choose.  Weekly letters are sent to all members who have signed up for News You Choose.  You must subscribe to receive the emails.

A quick checklist for you and your student as we prepare to return:

  • Have you turned in your documentation for the required immunizations like the TDAP?  We still have families who are missing documentation, and students will not be able to attend school without it!  We don't want your student to miss a single minute, so please bring those by the school or scan and email them to Dana Rivas - dhrivas@fcps.edu.
  • Have you marked your calendar for our Open House and Back to School Night dates?  If not, scroll down for more information.
  • Have your students who are 12 years old and older received the COVID vaccine?  While not required to attend school, it is highly recommended.

What Bus Will My Child Ride?

FCPS' Office of Facilities and Transportation is hard at work determining the bus routes for the upcoming school year.  With the bus driver shortage that many school systems are experiencing, they are having to develop some creative solutions for transporting students to and from school.  You will likely find out your student's bus information the week before school begins.

If you or someone you know is looking for work, please see the flyer below to learn more about becoming an FCPS bus driver!

School Supplies:

Please, supply your student with the following materials:

  • Backpack
  • Notebook paper
  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Highlighters
  • Laptop cover *

*Optional: Students will be permitted to carry backpacks during the school day, so a laptop cover is not required. Student laptop dimensions are 9. in x 13 in.

Open House - Wednesday, August 18th

On Wednesday, August 17th during the windows of time given. (8:00-11:00AM) & (12:00-2:00PM) & (3:00-5:00PM) Families are welcome to come to visit our building for our open house.  Families will have an opportunity to complete and turn in any outstanding forms and immunizations documents, briefly tour the school with their students, pick up schedules (which will also be available via StudentVue and ParentVue on August 18th at 6:00 am).  Tours will be self-directed.  Please note: teachers will be busy preparing for the opening of school and they will not be available to meet with students and families on the 17th – there will be the opportunity to meet teachers at our Back to School Night on September 14th.

During the open house, we also plan to provide support for families to get signed up for ParentVue and FCPS' new Learning Management System, Schoology.

An important update made to the Student Rights & Responsibilities document (SR&R) for the coming school year is the regulation to prohibit cell phone use in classrooms. Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones or earbuds during school. We acknowledge this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class. Please talk to your child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations. From the time students enter our building to the time they leave, cell phone use will not be permitted unless it is connected to their medical condition.

Please feel free to reach out and let us know what questions you have.  Thank you, and have a great week!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Staffing Update

We are still working towards being fully staffed. We have vacancies in Science, English, SPED and AVID right now. We have been working throughout the week to seek candidates, and I attended the FCPS job fair last week to recruit additional resumes for these vacancies.  We have secured a long-term substitute for some of our classrooms so that we can ensure we can keep their class, so students keep the schedules they have; while we find a certified teacher, and we are screening candidates for those classrooms.  I hope to have good news for you in my up-and-coming updates.

Remember that FCPS needs teachers, counselors, bus drivers, substitutes, student monitors, etc.  If you know of someone who is looking for work, please send them to explore our Career Opportunities
