LCES Updates 8/12/22: Summer Edition #3

summer

Welcome Families!

Hello Lees Corner families and friends!

We hope you are enjoying the last days of summer break before another great school year kicks off! It has been a busy, but mostly relaxing summer for me.  I traveled to North Carolina, South Carolina, and California to visit and enjoy time with family. We were able to relax and enjoy amazing sites, the beach, shopping, and delicious seafood. I was also able to enjoy my precious godchildren, Preston and Peyton- who will be entering kindergarten this fall!!

Mrs. Tapper enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband, son and dog, Fergus. They “traveled the world” all while staying in Northern Virginia and taking advantage of the rich array of resources and cultures available to us here. Highlights include visiting a lavender farm, visiting a sunflower farm, having afternoon tea in Georgetown, eating authentic and delicious Italian, Vietnamese, and Japanese food, and going to an array of outdoor concerts.

We’re excited to welcome everyone back, and hopeful that each of you had time for summer fun, including precious time with family and friends.

We’ve been very busy here, preparing for the upcoming school year! One week ago, we were fully staffed within our general and special education classrooms. Given our growing enrollment, we were recently allocated 1 more general education staff position, to support our primary grades. We are working quickly to fill this 1 classroom vacancy before the start of the school year!

We are excited to welcome our newest staff members to the Lees Corner family!  We’ve truly enjoyed connecting with them and can’t wait for you to meet them next week during Open House! Here is the list of new staff members and staff members returning to Lees Corner in different roles:

Kiss and Ride: Helpful Tips

Many families will use Kiss and Ride for both arrival and dismissal and the line can get long. Please be patient and kind with one another and our staff on duty! Here are a few more helpful tips:

  • morning drop-off starts at 8:35 a.m.
  • plan on being in line early
  • drivers should remain in the car
  • school staff will be on duty to assist students in unloading and loading
  • children should unload from the car on the passenger side only
  • cars should remain in a single file line. Passing other cars is NOT allowed in order to ensure the safety of all students.
  • afternoon pick-up starts at 3:35 p.m.
  • for afternoon pick-up, please display your assigned number in the right corner of your front windshield. Make sure your child knows what your number is (ie. 352). We will use the numbers to call the students out to your car.
  • Kiss and Ride ends before 4:00 p.m. Any students who have not been picked up by that time will be taken to the office. Parents will be contacted and must come to the office to sign their child out.

NEW Medication Protocols for the 22-23 School Year

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The safety of your child/children is a priority for us. This school year, we are changing some medication protocols to help ensure the safety of our medication administration management in Fairfax County Public Schools. These changes include:

  • Any time you drop off or pick up a medication in the health room, a Medication Delivery/Pick Up Form will be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian and the School Health Aide or FCPS staff member. This form will document that all required authorizations are complete, and the number of pills or amount of medication accepted/returned. A copy of the form will be given to the parent/guardian and school administrator.
  • Medications received will be verified to ensure the description of the medication on the container/packaging matches the medication in the container.
  • All medications must be in the original pharmacy container. Over the counter (OTC) medications must be in an unopened original container. It will no longer be acceptable for parents/guardians to bring in refills from home and place them into the container currently in the health room.
  • Only a 30-day supply of medications should be brought to school. No more than 100 tablets or pills of OTC medication should be brought to school.
  • The Health Room will be open to accept medications on the following dates:

Wednesday, August 17th from 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM & 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Thursday, August 18th from 9:00 AM- 3:30 PM

Friday, August 19th from 8:00 AM- 3:30 PM

All requirements outlined in FCPS Regulation 2102, First Aid, Emergency Treatment and Administration of Medication for Students, continue to apply.

We appreciate your support in implementing these new safety practices.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 571-567-1942 or the School Health Aide, Kathryn Mullins, at 703-227-3510.

Sincerely,

Kim

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Due This Summer

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application BEFORE the first day of the 22-23 school year which is Monday, August 22nd. The online application is now available via the FCPS homepage. Click here to fill out the online application.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Student Immunization Requirements

All students are required to be immunized against certain communicable diseases to attend school in the state of Virginia. It is important for all students to receive the required immunizations.

Please talk with your family healthcare provider about whether or not your child/children are up to date on their vaccines before the new school year begins. Submit updated immunization records to our school as soon as possible.

More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online
