Mrs. Sutton

Welcome, Mrs. Sutton

Pine Spring Elementary is excited to welcome Mrs. Stephanie Sutton, as our newest Assistant Principal. Mrs. Sutton comes to Pine Spring with sixteen years of educational experience. She has been a classroom teacher, literacy coach, and most recently, a Reading Resource Teacher with the Title I department in FCPS.

Please join Ms. Ganci, myself, and our entire Pine Spring staff in welcoming our newest Bobcat!

Free and reduced

Free and Reduced Meal Application

Families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application ten days prior to the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Please know that you are also helping Pine Spring when we are able to accurately record our school’s needs based on Free and Reduced Price Meal application numbers, as funds are distributed to schools based on these numbers. These funds allow us to provide our children with an equitable opportunity to thrive. At Pine Spring we use these funds to provide additional teachers that help close achievement gaps and increase rigor for all students. We also provide parent resources, supplies, family engagement opportunities such as Literacy and Science Night, and early intervention opportunities for our earliest learners.

Watch your email and our website for more information. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online. If you have questions, need a paper copy, or need assistance with the Free and Reduced-Price Meals application, please contact the front office at 571-226-4400. We look forward to supporting you.

Emergency Food Resources for Families

If you are in need of assistance, please call Fairfax County’s Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist you with any difficulties you are facing- including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, health care, and other needs. The most up-to-date information about local resources for families is available on the FCPS website. Organizations providing assistance are organized by geographic area.

Immunization

As we begin to look ahead to the 2022-23 school year, I encourage everyone to Be Wise, Immunize! Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep children protected from many diseases. Many children missed their wellness check-ups and their recommended childhood immunizations due to the COVID-19 disruption. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and protect them from serious diseases.

I encourage you to check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2022-23 school year as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, you can make an appointment with your healthcare provider or visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of child immunization clinics.

Please keep in mind that the closer we get to school starting, the more difficult it will be to get an appointment that works with your schedule. If you wait till the end of the summer when appointments will be limited your child may not be able to start school on time due to a delayed immunization appointment.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations and bring that to Pine Spring as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact us at 571-226-4400.

Students with Asthma

I would like to share some changes to the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) asthma care plan process beginning this school year 2022-23.  As part of the asthma care plan for your student, we will use the Virginia Asthma Action Plan template developed by the Virginia Asthma Coalition and adopted by the Virginia Department of Education to guide the care your student receives and serve as the health care provider orders.  For your convenience, I am attaching a copy of the Virginia Asthma Action Plan and including a link if you wish to download a PDF version of the Virginia Asthma Action Plan (click here).  The Virginia Asthma Action Plan is an important tool to communicate and coordinate asthma management between the health care provider, parent/guardian, and school.

If your student has a rescue asthma medication prescribed, please have this form completed by your student’s health care provider and bring in your student’s own rescue medication to the school health room.  The health care provider must be licensed to prescribe medication in the U.S.  Additionally,

  • The prescriber must complete the yellow and red zone (Peak Flow is optional).
  • If asthma medication is to be given prior to exercise, this must be checked off in the appropriate box above the Yellow Zone on the form.
  • If the prescriber approves your student to carry and administer the medication, the appropriate box above where the prescriber signs must be checked.
  • Parent/guardian must also sign this document.

Once your health care provider has completed the Virginia Asthma Action Plan, you will need to complete the FCPS Authorization for VA Asthma Action Plan (SS/SE-65) on the school website authorizing the principal designee/SHA/PHN/school staff to administer the asthma medication to your student.

Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  Thank you for your collaboration in keeping your student safe and healthy!

Open House- August 18th

Each year we welcome families into the building the Thursday before school starts for you to have an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, and see their classroom. We received a great deal of positive feedback about the less crowded classroom approach that we used last year, so we will use this format again this year. We believe that it lowered the stress for our youngest students, as they transition into school.

  • You will meet your child's teacher and visit the classroom to explore the safe and welcoming environment that our incredible teachers have created.
  • If you cannot attend the Open House, staff members will be available on the first day of school to assist students in locating their classrooms. You could also look it up in your ParentVue account starting on August 19.
  • While we understand that the schedule below may not be the most convenient for all families, we have prioritized a safe and low-stress opportunity for all children to walk into the building for the first time.
  • Please note that only teachers of the assigned time will be in their room, as all other teachers will be assisting you to your new classrooms. We ask that all students stay with their caregivers for the duration of the Open House.

Kindergarten Playdate

Come join us on Saturday, August 20th, from 10 AM-12 PM as our PTA hosts a Kindergarten Playdate. This is a great time for your child to make new friends with other kiddos that will be coming to Pine Spring in the fall. It's also an opportunity for you to meet other Pine Spring families.

Back to School Night

On Tuesday, September 13th, we will have our virtual Back to School Night. This is an opportunity for you to learn about the grade-level curriculum, how to access and understand your child’s learning progress, understand how attendance impacts learning progress. More information will be provided as the date approaches.

Registration

Please encourage anyone with a child in grades K-6 to register prior to school starting. We will not register any new students until after 11 AM on the first day of school. For safety reasons any child registering on the first day, will not begin school until the second day.
