Westgate Weekly News

Good Afternoon Westgate Families,

I hope this finds you having a wonderful first day of August!  I am not sure where the time goes as it is hard to believe we will be welcoming our students back to Westgate in three short weeks.  I hope you have been making fun memories with family and friends over the summer break.  We are busy planning for our return to school with students and staff and are looking forward to a great year ahead. Please see below for important information, dates, and events happening over the next few weeks.

As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Westgate and I hope you have a great week ahead!

All my best,

Hallie Demetriades

PTA Kindergarten Play Date - August 6, 10 a.m.

Join other kindergarten students and families at our last summer play date this Saturday, August 6 @ 10:00 a.m. on the Westgate playground.  This is a great opportunity for students and parents to meet families before the start of school.  We hope that many of our kindergarten families are able to attend!

Popsicles on the Playground - August 15, 12:30 p.m.

Our Popsicles on the Playground event will be held on Monday, August 15 from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. in lieu of our bus tour.  Stop by and say hello to teachers, reconnect with old friends, and meet new families as well.  This is a very informal drop by event where Westgate will be providing cold treats for our students.  We hope to see many students and families there!

Westgate Open House - August 19

Our annual Westgate Open House will be held on Friday, August 19.  This is an in-person event where students get to meet their teacher and some of their new classmates!  We encourage students to bring in their school supplies at Open House as it alleviates carrying too much on the first day of school.  This year, we are going to stagger times for our Kindergarten families.

Kindergarten Open House will start at 10:30 a.m. and last until 11:30 a.m.  Students in grades 1st -6th will have open house start at 11:00 a.m. and last until 12:00 p.m.  Kindergarten classrooms will close at 11:30 a.m. We hope that this will make the transition to school a less chaotic one for our newest Wolves who get to enter the building earlier than the rest of our students.

Please note that ONLY kindergarten families will be able to enter the building starting at 10:30 a.m.  All other students will be able to enter at 11:00 a.m.  If you have a child in Kindergarten and another grade (1st-6th) they are welcome to come with you at that time (10:30 a.m.) but will not be able to enter their classrooms until 11:00 a.m.  We hope this gives families with children in multiple grade levels an opportunity to visit all classrooms.

Safeway Spirit Campaign @ Anderson Rd. Store

This August, as we prepare to go back to school, Westgate Elementary School is participating in Safeway Foundation’s 6th Annual School Spirit fundraising campaign.

Safeway Foundation and our local Safeway store at 1688 Anderson Rd., McLean, VA will be collecting monetary donations on behalf of Westgate Elementary School. All funds raised at the store will be donated to our school to help us with supplies and/or projects.  Make sure you name "Westgate ES" when you are checking out.

We hope you will join us by showing your school spirit and donating at our local Safeway store!

Immunizations for 2022-23 School Year

As we begin to look ahead to the 2022-23 school year, I encourage everyone to Be Wise, Immunize! Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep children protected from many diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood immunizations during recent years of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and protect them from serious diseases.

I encourage you to check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2022-23 school year as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, you can make an appointment with your healthcare provider or visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of child immunization clinics.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations and bring that to Westgate as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact us at 703-610-5700.
