Senior Immunization Requirement Notice
The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
Effective July 1, 2021 all students entering twelfth grade will be required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.
Seniors cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.
Please provide one of the following documents to Herndon High School as soon as possible:
- An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online here.
Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.
Please contact Mrs. Barr at bsbarr@fcps.edu or 810.2306 if you have any questions.
Be Wise, Immunize! Required Vaccines for 2022-23 School Year
Vaccinations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood vaccinations over recent years because of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and ready for school. Check with your students’ health care providers now to make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.
Appointments are required for most vaccination clinics. Don’t wait until the last minute when you might not be able to find an appointment. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of clinics or schedule with your family’s health care provider.
Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.

From the Library
Summer reading is so important. Here are several ideas to keep the great stories coming.
- Students have access to hundreds of ebooks and e-audiobooks through their MackinVIA accounts year-round. Download the app and enjoy titles on the go. Titles that are checked out automatically drop off after 3 weeks.
- Every summer, SYNC Audiobooks for Teens offers FREE audiobook downloads for students ages 13 and up. Each Thursday, SYNC introduces two thematically-paired titles that are available that week. Once downloaded, these books never disappear—they’re yours to enjoy at your leisure. The program runs through August 17. Click here for details on downloading and accessing the titles through the Sora app.
- Over the summer, Fairfax County Public Library offers reading challenges and lots of other fun activities for all ages. You can find information here.
- Questions? Feel free to email us at hhs_library@fcps.edu. While we don’t check our email daily over the summer, you can expect a response within a few days.
