Principal's Message

soar

Dear Shrevewood Family,

We hope everyone is having a fun summer with family and friends. We have been excited to welcome around 70 students this summer for our Bridge to Kindergarten and SOAR programs here at Shrevewood. It has been a joy to see some of our newest as well as returning Wise Owls building relationships with teachers and each other.

While a number of schools in the county are still searching to find highly qualified candidates to fill their instructional vacancies, we are thrilled to share that we are currently fully staffed! As we prepare to successfully transition for the upcoming school year, it is important for our community to know that it was a challenge to find substitutes when our teachers were out of the building. While we know that FCPS is continuing to address the substitute shortage, Katie and I have proactively developed a plan for Shrevewood that would bring in members of our community as substitute teachers. For this plan to work, we need your help!

Our goal is to have a bank of at least 10 substitutes that are ready to support our school from our community from day one. This will ensure that we are not pulling resource teachers and/or specialists to cover classes. By doing this, we are providing the support needed to ensure that all of our staff are able to focus on their area of expertise in order to support your students with the highest level of excellence that we know they deserve! If you, or any of your extended family members, are interested in supporting these efforts and helping us to ensure that we have a proactive start to the school year, please email me at jjdesmyter@fcps.edu. We always appreciate and value our community's support.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter & Katie Vandawalker

Class Placement Information

We know that you are excited to receive information regarding your student's class placement. Our goal is for families to receive their student's class placement via eNotify on Friday, August 12th!

Free and Reduced-Priced Meal Applications

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application.

The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Summer Tutoring

Students have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families.  Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most K-12 subjects for however long they need. Tutoring may be on-demand and/or scheduled at a time convenient for the student and/or family.

Paperless Opt-Outs Available!

As a part of our ongoing efforts to streamline paper processes, parents can now select a number of opt-out’s electronically via ParentVUE.  Once you have signed into your ParentVUE account, simply select the “Student Info” tab and click on “Edit Information.” You will find opt-out’s listed there.  Parents that do not yet have a ParentVUE account will still be able to use paper forms for notification. If you need to set up your ParentVUE account, you can create one online via the FCPS ParentVUE Registration page.
