2022-23 School Year  Important  Dates


Please note that the first day of school for the 2022-23 school year will be Monday, August 22. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.  

Please Save the following dates.  

  • Jump Start for all 9th Graders:  July 25th-July 29th 
  • New Student and Freshmen Orientation:  August 16, 2022
  • MVHS Welcome Back Party: August 17, 2022
  • PSAT (grades 10-11) and SAT School day (grades 12): October 12, 2022

More information and details about these events will be shared next month and emailed to families.  


Jumpstart Program


Due to transportation and registration logistics, we are consolidating all 3 weeks into one week to be held July 25th-29th. The Jumpstart Program will be held from 9:30am to 1:30pm. Transportation will be provided to and from MVHS from the feeder elementary schools. We will send out another email the middle of next week confirming pick up and drop off times for the elementary schools.  We look forward to seeing and working with all of our rising 9th graders on Monday July 25th.  If you have any questions or concerns please email Erica Williams-Taylor at elwilliamst@fcps.edu.  Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.

12th Grade Immunization Requirement


  • Effective July 1, 2021 all students entering twelfth grade are required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of senior year.
  • Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.

If you have not already done so, please provide one of the following documents to Lorraine Fetterolf at  LMFetterolf@fcps.edu, our registrar ­­­as soon as possible and no later than August 1st, 2022:

  1. An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  4. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at this link.

Dear Families,

Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep children protected from many diseases. Several clinics are coming up soon in your area if your child needs an immunization to complete their records for the 2022-23 school year.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations and bring that to your school as soon as possible.

Welcome our New Choral Director


New Choral Director

A native of Williston, Vermont, Chelsea Huber comes to Fairfax County from Durham Public Schools in North Carolina, where she has just completed her fifth year as a choral director. In addition to teaching, she has performed with North Carolina Opera and the NC Master Chorale, as well as assistant directed productions with White Iris Light Opera and the Durham Savoyards. She graduated from Meredith College, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Education from UNC-Greensboro. She is also the music and dance editor for Cultural Voice North Carolina (CVNC.org).  Ms. Huber will direct both the Whitman and Mount Vernon High School choral programs.  We are excited to have her join our Major family.

Early Online College


Start your college career early with online courses at NOVA! Early Online College (EOC) allows current high school juniors or seniors the opportunity to take up to two tuition free college courses this fall.  

The application is now open and will close at 5PM on July 29th, 2022. All students will be required to upload a high school transcript and any qualifying test scores if they do not have a 3.0 GPA. Online courses begin September 19, 2022 and end on December 13, 2022

Early College Access

Plan to Submit Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications This Summer


Families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application ten  days prior to the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.  

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes. Schools also benefit from funding opportunities based on Free and Reduced Price Meal application numbers.
