I am happy to welcome Monika Guerrero Vereb, previous Assistant Principal at Lightridge High School in Loudoun County,  as the new Principal of Herndon Middle School. Ms. Vereb is a highly motivated instructional and equity leader who values feedback, developing relationships, and creating professional development for school leaders and staff. I look forward to working with her.

Construction Underway

The Georgetown Pike bridge work will require periodic lane closures during non-peak travel periods (midday and overnight hours). Travelers approaching the Georgetown Pike bridge should anticipate delays and plan their trips accordingly.

Before School Starts

School Immunization Requirements

Be Wise Immunize!

Vaccinations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood vaccinations over recent years because of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and ready for school. Check with your students’ health care providers now to make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.

Appointments are required for most vaccination clinics. Don’t wait until the last minute when you might not be able to find an appointment. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of clinics or schedule with your family’s health care provider.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications

Available Later This Summer

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire  meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. Tuesday Summer Meal Kits

Summer meal kits will be offered on Tuesdays at several locations through August 9. Meal kits contain seven days of breakfast and lunch items packed in bulk. All meals are available at no-cost to FCPS students and children 18 years of age and under. Pick up locations and times have recently been updated. Dranesville Advisory Committee Openings

Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC)

Dranesville and At-Large Position Openings

The Fairfax County School Board invites applications from community members interested in serving on the Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC) for the Dranesville District and for an At-Large member. FPAC advises and informs FCPS staff and the School Board in the development of comprehensive, long-term plans for facilities.

The Facilities Planning Advisory Council consists of 13 members, one from each Fairfax County magisterial district, three at-large representatives, and one representative from the City of Fairfax, each appointed for three-year terms. The current council member appointment will end June 30, 2025.

FCPS encourages individuals with experience in construction, engineering, architecture, land use planning, development, demographics, government operations, and financing to apply. The deadline to submit an application is July 11. Applicants must reside within the boundaries of Fairfax County or Fairfax City. More information and an application are available online.

Advanced Academic Programs Advisory Committee (AAPAC)

Committee Purpose

Va. Code §22.1-18.1—Each school board may appoint, in accordance with the regulations of the Board of Education, a local advisory committee on gifted education. The local advisory committee on gifted education shall annually review the local plan for the education of gifted students, including revisions, and determine the extent to which the plan for the previous year was implemented.

2021-22 Committee Charge

Middle school is a critical transition time between elementary and high school.  AAPAC will study advanced academic opportunities and research-based approaches to Honors coursework at the middle school level and make recommendations to improve talent development and advanced differentiation practices at this level.

Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) 

Committee Purpose

Va. Code §22.1-275.1—Each school board may establish a school health advisory board of no more than twenty members which shall consist of broad-based community representation including, but not limited to, parents, students, health professionals, educators, and others. The advisory board shall assist with the development of health policy in the school division and the evaluation of the status of school health, health education, the school environment, and health services.

2021-22 Committee Charge

SHAC focused on student anxiety. They researched schools modeling approaches that are helping students flourish by promoting mental health for staff, students, and caregivers.  Time permitting, they hoped to create webinars or podcasts to interview and share positive outcomes from schools with creative ideas to share.

Student Bus pass

Expanded Metro Bus Program

The Metrobus pass pilot program, launched in 2018 at Justice High School, is being expanded to four additional schools this fall: Annandale High School, Falls Church High School, Marshall High School, and Davis Center. The expanded student bus pass adds Metrobus access to the Fairfax Connector and City of Fairfax CUE access already offered to students at these schools. 

The pass will be valid for specific routes in Northern Virginia between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. and will be available to students at no charge. Participating schools will provide more information when students return in the fall.


Summer Tutor.com

Summer Access to Tutor.com

FCPS students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com this summer. Students are able to use Tutor.com to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need. Students may also choose to access other tools such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas, as well as self-paced study courses for SAT and ACT preparation.

Details about how students can access Tutor.com through archived courses in Schoology are provided in Summer Access at Tutor.com - Online Tutoring Services. Students enrolled in summer Credit Recovery Academy, Online Campus, Online Economics and Personal Finance, and TJHSST summer courses will be able to access Tutor.com via their active summer course in Schoology.

Congratulations to the McLean HS It’s Academic team! They defeated Rockville HS and Montgomery Blair HS. This is the first time a FCPS team has won since 1993. Well done!


Max Feinberg America Ninja warrior

Max Feinberg on American Ninja Warrior

McLean HS 2022 graduate Max Feinberg is back competing on American Ninja Warrior. He had his qualifying round on June 20th. His semifinal round will air on NBC 8/1 at 8pm. Good luck Max!


Cooper MS

Congratulation to Cooper MS 8th grader Kriesh Tivare  for winning VA’s State Merit Winner in the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge for his project “Nifty Nanogenerators- Electricity Generation using Triboelectricity.”


Haycock ES

Sabina Hagen, a Haycock 6th grader, placed 5th in the National History Day Competition in the Junior paper category for her project “The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965: Debate and Diplomacy over the National Origins Quota." Also, at a recent School Board meeting, Sabina with her brother Deven, advocated for the FCPS recognition celebrating Immigration Heritage Month at our last meeting.

July 4: all day- Village Centre, Village Green and Turner Farm

  • Events 9 am- 2pm- parade, food and fun and a blood drive
  • Cornhole tournament and Fireworks at Turner Farm 6-9:30pm

Herndon Fourth of July Celebration

July 4th 6:30-10:30 p.m.- 814 Ferndale Ave. Herndon

  • Old-fashioned games, arts & crafts, live music by party band Hipshack, and - of course - fireworks, beginning at 9:30pm

McLean Community Center

The Alden July Events

This July has five Sundays, and you know what that means... you get five Sunday Summer Concerts in the Park! We've got quite the eclectic and awesome lineup, so just come to McLean Central Park every Sunday at 3 p.m. and be surprised. But wait! There's more! We're partnering with the Fairfax County Public Library to bring you a program on the history of African American spirituals. It's free, but slots will go fast, so register now. And if that's not enough, McLean Community Players makes their triumphant return to The Alden stage with a musical revue of Broadway hits. Come out and support local talent! Learn more here.

Public Hearing on MCC's Draft Strategic Plan

Wednesday, July 6, 6:30 p.m.

The McLean Community Center (MCC) is seeking public input as it finalizes its strategic plan based on public feedback gathered from district residents over the last several months. MCC invites residents of Dranesville Small District 1A to express their ideas about the future programming and strategic priorities of the center  at this public hearing.
