Important Dates
July 4: Independence Day, School/Office Closed
August 1: Fall Sports Tryouts Begin; Marching Band Begins
August 22: First Day of School
General Information
Main Office Hours
Beginning, Tuesday, June 14 we will transition to our summer office hours. We will be available in the main office from 9:00am-1:00pm, Monday through Friday. We have very few staff members who work throughout the summer, so we encourage anyone coming in to call in advance or email the appropriate school personnel to set up a meeting.
Student Parking Permit Applications
Student parking permit applications will be shared in mid to late July. At that time we will share more information on if we will be accepting applications from both juniors and seniors, or if it will remain reserved to the senior class only. We need to continue to track our progress on the renovation of the parking lots. Once we know how many spots we will have available, we will make that decision. The parking permit application will be shared in this newsletter and on the Oakton HS website.
Back to School Events
We have been fielding calls in the office about back to school events for the 2022-2023 school year. We are still planning for the opening of school. All of our activities and events will be scheduled and advertised in mid-July. Parents can also anticipate a back-to-school hyperdoc with all of our back-to-school information in early August.
Summer Meal Service
Summer meal kits will be offered on Tuesdays at several locations through August 9. Meal kits contain seven days of breakfast and lunch items packed in bulk. All meals are available at no-cost to FCPS students and children 18 years of age and under. Pick up locations and times have recently been updated. Visit our Meals for Students website for more details.
Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Available Later This Summer
For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.

If your student took SOL tests this spring at Oakton High School, you can view their scores in SIS ParentVUE after June 8, 2022. Tutor.com Summer Access
Oakton students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com this summer. Students are able to use Tutor.com to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need. Students may also choose to access other tools such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas, as well as self-paced study courses for SAT and ACT preparation.
Details about how students can access Tutor.com through archived courses in Schoology are provided in Summer Access at Tutor.com - Online Tutoring Services. Students enrolled in summer Credit Recovery Academy, Online Campus, Online Economics and Personal Finance, and TJHSST summer courses will be able to access Tutor.com via their active summer course in Schoology.
Health and Wellness
Mental Wellness Consultations
This summer, the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 21, 2022 through August 5, 2022. Parents and students will have an opportunity to schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:
-
Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, behavioral, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
-
Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time-management.
All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service by clicking here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 703-503-2520.
Immunization Requirement – Rising 12th Graders
There was a new immunization requirement for rising 12th graders for this school year that we want to ensure all rising 12th grade families are aware. Effective July 1, 2021, all students entering twelfth grade are required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school. Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.
Please provide one of the following documents to Oakton High School as soon as possible:
- An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine at age 16 or older.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given at age 16 or older.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf
Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online or by calling 703-246-2411.
The needed documentation can be provided to the school in one of the following ways:
- Scanned and emailed to the school at OaktonHSOffice@fcps.edu
- Mailed to the school, Attn: Jill Hendelman
- Dropped off in the Main Office, Attn: Jill Hendelman
Please contact Jill Hendelman at 703-319-2810 if you have any questions.
Be Wise, Immunize! Required Vaccines for 2022-23 School Year
Vaccinations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood vaccinations over recent years because of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up now to keep children healthy and ready for school. Check with your students’ health care providers now to make sure they are up to date on their vaccines.
Appointments are required for most vaccination clinics. Don’t wait until the last minute when you might not be able to find an appointment. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of clinics or schedule with your family’s health care provider.
Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.
