1. Message from Dr. Floyd
Happy Summer Woodson Community!
I hope this special edition of this Woodson Weekly comes at a time of relaxation when you are not giving the new school year a single thought! We are here at Woodson preparing for the new year and I wanted to share a few pieces of information.
This year, many families have asked for resources around mental health. We have a story below with some resources, including finding a counselor / therapist. With all that is going on in this world today, if someone reaches out for help we want to assist in any way possible. The Cavalier community supports one another and is committed to the health and wellness of our students, staff and families. Some new resources are listed below in story #9.
Our annual Cav Kickoff will be Thursday, August 18th from 11am-1:30pm. This will include an orientation for new students to Woodson as well as an open house to meet your teachers. Schedules will be released in SIS by the morning of August 18th and we will also have hard copies available at the school. Parents are invited for the parent session at the same time. Transportation will be provided from the pyramid elementary schools. Supply lists will be available at this time as well. More information to come!
While specific supply lists are not available until August 18, if you want to get ahead of the rush and take advantage of some deals that are out now, you can always purchase binders of various sizes, pens, pencils and paper but keep the receipts and return what is not needed after the 18th.
Finally, graduation has been scheduled for the Class of 2023. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 6th at 7:30pm. Graduation will take place at EagleBank Arena on the campus of George Mason University.
Here are the links to some stories online about Mr. Hedrick one of our social studies teachers and his work at the Ukraine boarder last month: Fox 5 WUSA 9 NBC 4
I wish everyone a peaceful rest of the summer. Please apply sunscreen and be safe everyone!

The VHSL Physical Form must be completed by a parent/guardian and doctor. In order for the physical to be accepted for the 2022-2023 school year, it cannot be filled out and dated by a doctor until May 1, 2022 or after.
Once completed, please drop it off to Woodson's Activities Office, Woodson's Main Office or scan it to the Athletic Trainer Chris Hogge at chogge@fcps.edu. This must be turned in prior to participating in athletics.
Sports Registration
If your student tried out for a sports team during the 2021-22 school year, then you will be able to login as a returning user (given that you registered your student!). All students must be registered for their selected sports prior to attending tryouts and out of season workouts.
If your student did not tryout for a sports team last school year, or you have a rising freshman, then you will need to create an account and register. Helpful tips can be found here. Register Here!
9. Mental Wellness Consultations
This summer, the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 21, 2022 through August 5, 2022. Parents and students will have an opportunity to schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Consultations will be offered in two ways:
-
Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, behavioral, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.
-
Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time-management.
All parents and secondary students are encouraged to take advantage of this service by clicking here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 703-503-2520.

10. Meals at School for 2022-2023
For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.
Eligible families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.
Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.
11. Immunization Requirements for Rising Seniors
The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
All students entering twelfth grade will be required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.
Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.
Please provide one of the following documents to Woodson Registrar, Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu as soon as possible:
- An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online
Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.
Please contact Woodson Registrar, Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu if you have any questions.
