FCPS School Year Calendar for 2022-23 https://www.fcps.edu/calendars/standard-school-year-calendar/2022-23-school-year-calendar

Dear Parents,

We hope all of you are enjoying the first days of summer break! We are already preparing for the next school year.  Our summer hours are 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Note that for the next three weeks, we will have construction in the front loop which will give us additional parking.  Please do not pull into the front loop.

During the summer, our building and grounds are busy.  McLean Community Camp, Chesterbrook SOAR and KG SOAR will be in the building.  Please be mindful of the playground if many students are present - please use after hours.

A huge thanks to the PTA and their continued support.  We are excited to continue our partnership! Below we have detailed some of the open spots for the next school year. Thanks to all for the fabulous 6th grade party and our other fun events!! We certainly enjoyed bringing closure to the school year and showing our #kgpride!

Some reminders as we prepare for the next school year:

  • Please sign up for band and strings - the link is here and more details are below.
  • Continue to have your child read!  There is the library challenge below!  We encourage you to read with your child. If you find a library book over the summer, feel free to return to the school!
  • Are you struggling to find the right book - access input on the link here from our Parent Engagement Night. The link is in Schoology - you will need to access through your account.
  • Math fun - feel free to practice some fun math games with your child.  We included in our parent engagement night.  The link is here to access in Schoology.

Band and Strings Sign Up!! Grades 4 - 6

We look forward to a vibrant and exciting year in band and strings!! This year, we had an amazing year with our music program! We are recruiting students for band and strings. Please do complete the google form now. Most students play an instrument in grades 4 - 6.

Strings is offered to students in grades 4 - 6.  As 4th grade is the initial entry, we typically have over 95% participation. Ms. Anita Su,asu@fcps.edu, will continue to be our amazing strings instructor (so lucky to have her with us!!) and we are hopeful to have Ms. Ahnika Emery, aremery@fcps.edu, who is also an experienced strings instructor. They are excited for the start of the new year! Here is the to sign up for strings! They are visiting the students this week to introduce the strings instruments – viola, violin, cello and bass.  It is a great start to joining a musical experience!  Sign up here!  The teachers are visiting the classrooms this week!

Band is offered to students in grades five and six. Band instruction begins in 5th grade. Students who participated in strings in the fourth grade either stay with the strings instruction or explore a new instrument in band. We have Mr. Brad Zimmerman, an amazing experienced FCPS band instructor, bszimmerman@fcps.edu, returning to KG, thfrederick@fcps.edu.  It promises to be another wonderful year! Here is the link to sign up now for band for the next school year.

You are welcome to reach out to the instructors or the school administration team with questions.

Free and Reduced Meals

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Eligible families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.
