Happy Summer Lemon Road

Last Day

Happy Summer Lemon Road Community!

Thank you to everyone for another wonderful year at Lemon Road. This year, like no other, it took a village to support each other and our students.  Ms. Ulsh and I are incredibly grateful for the support we felt each day from our parents and community.  Even in the last week, we saw so many smiling volunteers at Field Day, proud parents of musicians at our concerts, room parents and volunteers organizing and executing end of year parties, sixth grade parents celebrating a very full "Sixth Grade Day", and finally many smiling faces at our promotion and awards ceremonies.

Thank you specifically to our PTA, who did so many big and little things to enhance our school culture, bring us together, provide needed resources, and help us celebrate our successes!

This summer the office will be open from 9 AM - 1 PM and by appointments. Please email Ms. Nealson if your family needs an appointment at manealson@fcps.edu.

We hope everyone has a safe, fun, and relaxing summer.  Please join us for the playdates, library events, and book mobiles when you can.  I will send newsletters periodically to keep families informed of summer and Back to School events.  Thank you!

Staff Farewells

Preschool

The following staff members will be departing this summer. While some wonderful opportunities await them, we will certainly miss them next year. Thank you to the following staff members for their many contributions to our school community:

  • Abby Knutsen (Preschool) is retiring! Congratulations, Ms. Knutsen!
  • Danielle Fox  (2nd grade) is exploring a new career supporting college students online
  • Ritu Dogra (Special Education) is moving to Cooper Middle School to continue teaching students with disabilities
  • Kathy Creston (Instructional Assistant) is staying home next year to support her family
  • Janette Corcelius (Music) has accepted a full-time teaching position at an elementary school in FCPS
  • Jenni Eyink (Band) is moving to Pennsylvania to be closer to family
  • Cheryl Bearss (Art) is continuing to teach art at Westgate and will spend more time creating her own amazing artwork

With the exception of a special education teacher position, we are fully staffed for next year! If you know of a special education teacher interested in working at Lemon Road, please connect them with Ashley at aocastillo@fcps.edu. We look forward to introducing our new staff members in August.

Summer Playdates

Playground

Each summer the school and PTA partner together to arrange a few playdates to welcome new and returning families.  These are casual gatherings to create opportunities for students to connect and play while the adults network and form relationships.  The PTA typically ensures that there are some cool drinks and snacks to fuel the fun.  Families are encouraged to join as many playdates as they can - we target our rising kindergarteners and new families, but veteran families help us welcome new lions to the pride!

Free and Reduced-Priced Meal Applications

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application.

The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Tutor.com Online Tutoring

Lemon Road students will continue to have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com this summer. Students are able to use Tutor.com to review and/or practice in subject areas of interest or need. Students may also choose to access other tools such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas.

Details about how students can access Tutor.com through archived courses in Schoology are provided in Summer Access at Tutor.com - Online Tutoring Services

New Lemon Road Mural

Mural

We were fortunate to welcome Catherine Kang, McLean High School student to collaborate with Lemon Road students to paint a mural near our interior kiss & ride exit at Lemon Road.  She shared about her project below:

I chose to do a mural at Lemon Road ES because I wanted to expose young students to maintaining good mental health and how art could be an outlet for stress and anxiety they might feel especially as they transition into middle school. When I was creating the design for the mural I had to make sure that the design was simple enough for students to engage with and contribute to which is why I chose triangle patterns for the grass and minimal details on the lion. Further, I chose the lion mascot because I felt that it was something that all Lemon Road students could relate to. I included the students in all the steps required for the mural such as protecting the ground, taping, painting, and removing the tape. By involving them in each step, the mural was able to be completed entirely by the students.  I and they are very proud of their work!
