Family Newsletter for June 8

This is the last Family Newsletter message I will write as principal of Union Mill. These past 11 years have been memorable in so many ways. I arrived at Union Mill with a new cohort of Union Mill families after the closing of Clifton Elementary and we worked together to create a school culture where all felt a part of the school. One of our best traditions, the Back to School Picnic, was a direct result of a student from Clifton sharing that was something that was special about their school. I think everyone will agree that it was so wonderful to be able to bring the picnic back after a year's hiatus.

We went through building modifications and a very rushed addition as we welcomed families from the Centreville and Centre Ridge communities through another boundary change. Our numbers shot up to over 1,000 students and again, we all came together to create a unified school family.

We have had many students, staff, and families pass through our doors over these past 11 years and the support and commitment to our school has been amazing, especially over these challenging times due to COVID. I could not have asked to lead a more wonderful community and school and the hard part of leaving is saying goodbye to the students, families, and best staff in Fairfax County.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything!

With gratitude and love,

Kathy
Principal of the Best School

6th Grade Promotion Ceremony Information

We will hold our 6th grade promotion ceremony tomorrow morning, Thursday, June 9, at 9:15. The ceremony will be held on the blacktop. Parents should arrive in time to walk around the school to the blacktop and should not enter the school. We will have chairs set up for our 6th grade students and staff and will have chairs available for parents. Parents can set up their own chairs where they feel comfortable sitting as long as the ceremony space is not used. Thank you for respecting others' bubbles and comfort levels.

Lost and Found

Please visit the table in front of the school and claim your child's Lost and Found. All items will be donated or tossed next week.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications/ Summer Meals

The federal waiver allowing all students to receive free and reduced-price meals is set to expire this summer. Families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for SY 22-23. For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. However, the extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year.

Please review and submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application prior to the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer.  Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.

No-cost summer meals will be served at all FCPS summer school locations this year. Please visit the FCPS website for updated information during the summer.

School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms. This may include principals, school counselors, and main office staff members. The survey has been approved for distribution by the FCPS’ Internal Survey Advisory Committee.

Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed at:

School Health Services Survey – STAFF 2022: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KDDYRW3 approval #21230

Please respond to this short survey by Friday, June 10, 2022.

library Books

Please check those desks, under the bed, the family room, the car, and other hiding places for our library books. We have approximately 20 books that need to be returned before the end of the year. Help us get to "0" for this year! Thank you for helping us keep our library fully stocked.

Family Return to School Survey

We are interested in hearing about how the 2021-22 school year has gone for students. You have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which you should have received via email.

The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division.

We encourage all Union Mill parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. It will also be included in ESSER III reporting.
