Franklin MS Weekly Update - June 3

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon. I hope that you have had a great week.

It is hard to believe it, but we have made it to the month of June! We have one more week left in the school year and our staff and students are ready to finish strong and end the year on a high note. There will be several opportunities next week for our students to celebrate their success this year, reflect on the growth that has occurred, and set goals for what lies ahead. I would encourage all of our families to have similar conversations with your students.

I would like to also use this space to put a spotlight on all of the former Franklin Falcons who graduated Oakton HS, Chantilly HS, and several other area high schools this week. Congratulations on this great achievement. We are very proud of you!

Finally, on behalf of the entire Franklin MS staff, I would like to express our gratitude to all of the parents and family members who have supported our students this year. It has been an incredible journey and our partnership with you has been the key to our students' success.

With Gratitude,

Dustin Wright

English Language Learners’ Presentation of Learning

Students reflected on Portrait of a Graduate skills by collecting artifacts that demonstrated their learning throughout the year. They reflected on each artifact and made connections to how their learning will help them on their road to graduation. Each student also created a vision board displaying what is important to them as they plan for the future. Students expressed how much they appreciated learning about other cultures from their classmates, and how much their English language skills have improved this year.

Library Updates

Thank you to all students and staff who checked out over 8,000 books from the library this year. All books are due back to the library now so others may use them. Please contact Mrs. Ruffle if students are unsure if they owe books to the library.

There are recommendations for summer reading on the Summer Reading Choice Board that is posted in the Schoology Library Course. 42 students won a free book to read this summer by participating in multiple activities and giving feedback on the choice board. Remember to keep reading, stay safe, and keep in touch!

Franklin MS After School Program

Medication Pickup

All medication stored in the clinic must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school, June 10th at 12:15 PM. Medication left in the clinic after June 10th at 12:15 PM will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. If you have any questions, please contact your School Health Aide, Donna Long at (703) 904-5110.

Expunging High School Credits

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA). VA State and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians to make a request to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

Please contact your child's school counselor and submit the completed Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Due This Summer

  • For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public-school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.
  • Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.
  • Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes.

We Speak Public Speaking Summer Workshop

We Speak is a free public speaking summer workshop for 6th - 8th graders sponsored by three Oakton High School rising senior students. At We Speak, students will learn strategies to overcome public speaking anxiety and oration techniques to engage audiences. We Speak is a great opportunity for students to practice their public speaking skills and improve their public speaking confidence in order to prepare for high school and higher level classes.

Already have summer plans? Not to worry! We Speak does not require a large time commitment. We Speak will be running from June 25 to July 23 and only meets once a week on Saturdays from 2 - 4 PM. Snacks will be provided! We hope to see you this summer! Please click here for more information or contact us by email at: wespeakworkshop@gmail.com.
