Principals' Message

Dear Bonnie Brae School Community,

What an amazing Fine Arts Concert we had Wednesday night!  Our students looked and sounded incredible, and we want to thank our band, strings, & chorus directors (Mr. Freeman, Mr. Miller, Ms. Oedemann, & Ms. Warr) for their efforts as they led their respective performances.  Our first in-person concert since 2019 was a huge success and we so enjoyed seeing our Scotties do their thing!

How can it be that next week is already the last week of school?  It doesn't seem possible.  This time of year truly is bittersweet for teachers and staff.  We are able to reflect on the incredible progress students have made and, at the same time, will miss our students so much over the summer.

We are looking forward to many fun activities this week, including our class celebrations (Wednesday, June 8 for grade 6, & Thursday, June 9 for grades K-5).  Our 6th grade promotion will be held the morning of June 9, and our last day of school is Friday, June 10.  As a reminder, there is a 2-hour early release on the last day of school.

Enjoy some time outside these next few days, and have a great weekend with your family!

Sincerely,

Morgan Birge, Principal

6th Grade Promotion Ceremony

promotion

As a reminder, our 6th grade promotion ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 9, from 9-10 AM.  We are excited to celebrate our 6th graders’ promotion to middle school.  Weather permitting, we will be on the blacktop and it is looking like a sunny and 80 degree day!

While we will not be monitoring the number of guests for each family, due to spacing and seating constraints we are recommending, but not requiring, two guests per 6th grade student.

This is a special day for our 6th grade students and families, and we are looking forward to recognizing them on Thursday, June 9th from 9-10 AM!

Student Laptop Collection

As the end of the school year approaches, we wanted to share with you the procedures related to the FCPS laptop assigned to your student.  We will be collecting all student laptops and chargers at the end of this school year, so that we may complete our inventory and maintenance on our laptop collection.

Each classroom will be assigned a check-in time. Please ensure that your student has their laptop and charger ready to hand back on the day below. Their teacher and our technology team will support students in returning laptops. Following is our schedule for each grade-level:

  • Preschool Programs- Thursday, May 25
  • Kindergarten- Wednesday, May 25
  • Grade 1- Tuesday, May 24
  • Grade 2- Thursday, June 2
  • Grade 3- Wednesday, June 1
  • Grade 4- Thursday, June 2
  • Grade 5- Wednesday, June 8
  • Grade 6- Tuesday, June 7
  • Grades 4-6- Soft laptop cases will not be collected; students may keep these and use them for next year.

Summer Programs

If your student is participating in Summer Learning Programs, students may keep the laptop through July 22, 2023.

  • One the last day of summer programs, we will be collecting laptops for students on-site at Bonnie Brae Elementary
  • For any Summer Programs held elsewhere, we will be sending out drop-off times and will need the laptops returner no later than July 29, 2022

Please note that we will re-distribute laptops to our students in the fall when our inventory and maintenance is complete, so your student will be able to use an FCPS laptop again next year.

Thank you,

FCPS' Family Return to School Survey Is Coming Soon

Now that FCPS has transitioned back to a more typical school experience, the school division is interested in hearing from parents/caregivers about how the school year has gone for their students. You will have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which will open Tuesday, May 31, and close Friday, June 10.

The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division. We encourage all FCPS parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. It will also be included in ESSER III reporting.

FCPS Cares

FCPS CARES is an opportunity for staff, parents, students, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others. Every month, a nominated employee from each region and Central Offices will be recognized as an FCPS CARES of the Month recipient. We’ll share their names in Employee News, and they will also have access to a new FCPS CARES banner for their profile photo in Outlook. Watch this video to learn more about FCPS CARES. We also encourage you to acknowledge a staff member who has gone above and beyond!  We love our KPES staff members, let's tell them how we feel!

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Due This Summer

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Summer Meal Service

No-cost summer meals will be served at all FCPS summer school locations this year. Please visit our website for updated information during the summer.

Tutor.com - Available Summer 2022

Students may also choose to access other tools/services such as practice quizzes in a variety of subject areas, as well as self-paced study courses for SAT/ACT preparation.

Details about how students can access Tutor.com via archived courses in Schoology are provided in Summer Access at Tutor.com - Online Tutoring Services.  Students enrolled in summer Credit Recovery Academy, Online Campus, Online Economics & Personal Finance, and TJHSST summer courses will be able to access Tutor.com via their active summer course in Schoology.
