Free and Reduced Lunch Meal Plan Returns for 2022-23 School Year

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application.  The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Eligible families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.  Paper free and reduced-price meals applications are available to all households at school offices, school cafeterias, and other FCPS buildings or by contacting Food and Nutrition Services at 703-813-4800 or 703-813-4844.  Also, it’s important that parents/guardians complete the Consent to Share form so that their course fees can be waived based upon their FNR status.  This form is available here in different languages.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

No-cost summer meals will be served at all FCPS summer school locations this year. Please visit our website for updated information during the summer.

happy retirement

Congratulations to our Retirees

This time of year is always hard when we have to say good-bye to some of our amazing staff. We have three staff members retiring this year, all who have both had big impacts on Kings Glen over the years. We invite you to join us in wishing them well on their next adventure.  Congratulations and Happy Retirement to Leah Hettema, Denise Milford, and Kathy Baker.

Yearbooks

It's Not Too Late to Order a Yearbook!

If you have not yet ordered a yearbook, there is still a limited supply available for purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost is $15.00.  You can purchase a yearbook via cash or check (payable to Kings Glen ES) while supplies last.

Plastic Collection at Kings Glen - Paused for the Summer

Thanks to all who donated plastic throughout the school year! We exceeded our 500lb goal by 340lbs!! And received our recycled bench. We plan to have the Buddy Bench installed for use in the fall. We will take a summer break on plastic collection and start back up in August.

Digital Citizenship

This week during Morning Meeting, each class is talking about and learning more about Digital Citizenship. This is something that we address regularly through the school year and thought that it would be a helpful reminder as we move into the summer.  We encourage you to visit the FCPS Digital Citizenship page for helpful resources linked here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-citizenship-internet-safety/digital-citizenship-families  Some of the information includes “Establishing Expectations at Home” and “Choosing Apps, Games, and Services Wisely.”  Please take the time to review this information and discuss it with your child(ren).

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our website.

KGES Summer Reading Challenge

Rising 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who complete a public library summer reading challenge will be able to turn their completed challenges in to the Kings Glen Library in August for a certificate and a small prize.  Any area public library is fine, including ones that are out of state if your child will not be here this summer.  Rising 4th graders may also complete the Kings Park ES Library challenge for credit.  Participants will be entered into a drawing for a larger prize of free books. Please e-mail Carolyn Dean if you have any questions.

FCPL Summer Reading Adventure

The Fairfax County Public Library’s summer reading challenge this year will be Oceans of Possibilities.  It will run from June 10-August 12, 2022, and offers participants two options: complete reading-and library-related activities or log time spent reading. Finishers will receive a variety of prizes, including ticket vouchers for a Washington Nationals game, and outings at Fairfax County Park Authority facilities. Sign up to participate in the Summer Reading Adventure online or through the Beanstack app, or pick up a paper log at any FCPL branch beginning June 10th.

As a reminder, the newly elected PTA board will be getting together in the coming weeks and over the summer to plan the next school year.  If you have any ideas/suggestions or would like to be involved and volunteer in some capacity, please fill out this form or reach out to kpkgpta@gmail.com
